Dorchester driver charged with killing Morrissey Boulevard bicyclist while drunk

Michael Ahern, 46, was arrested yesterday on charges he ran down and killed a man riding his bicycle down Morrissey Boulevard early Friday, the Suffolk County District Attorney's office reports.

Doan Bui, 63, was pronounced dead at the scene following the 12:30 a.m. crash near Malibu Beach between Ahearn's pickup and his bike.

Prosecutors formally charged Ahern with motor-vehicle homicide, operating under the influence of alcohol, operating to endanger and speeding at his arraignment in Dorchester District Court.

Prosecutors charged Ahern had an "atrocious" and long history of driving infractions and said he had been drinking at Slate Bar and Grill on High Street downtown, which he co-owns.

At the scene, he was allegedly unsteady on his feet, incoherent, and smelled of alcohol. A preliminary estimate put his speed at 50 miles per hour in a 30 mph zone.

Prosecutors say the only smart thing he did all night was to stay at the crash scene and call 911 for help.

The Dorchester Reporter reports Ahern is a well known local contractor who recently opened the Sweet Life restaurant in Lower Mills.

Innocent, etc.
