At last minute, North End group gets permission to plant 10,000 daffodil bulbs on Greenway

With a little help from Mayor Menino, a North End parks advocacy group has gotten the OK from the Greenway to plant lots of bulbs in the park, NorthEndWaterfront.com reports. Greenway officials had initially said the request would have to wait until February or thereabouts, which would have been too late for bulb planting.

Daffodils are one of the few bulbs that squirrels, etc., don't like the taste of and leave alone. Other bulbs, like tulips, are an animal buffet, and if you want to see them bloom, have to be planted under wire mesh all winter.

Daffodils come in a variety of shapes and colors, often have a pleasant fragrance, naturalize well, and are durable in our climate. What's not to like?

Ornamental cabbage! Enjoy!

Meanwhile, what's better than daffodils on the Greenway?

Enough of all the pretty plants, trees, bushes, shrubs, lawns and other forms of "nature." If the Greenway needs to be prettied up more why not just buy a bunch of plastic flowers and stick them everywhere? All this work of planting things that grow and die is a terrible waste of space and money.

Folks in Dorchester have it right. Cover yards with asphalt leaving thin border of dirt. Plant plastic flowers but keep out the grubby plastic flower pickers with plastic fences.

Before you know it people will demand trees, argue for yet more bushes, will even want to grow vegetables growing in the city. Worse they will start demanding things like clean and quiet spaces where there are no loud cell phones play hip-hop, cars with screaming horns when they're locked or unlocked, motorcycles that shake buildings with their boom or people yelling in the cell phone about the @#$#@%$ neighbor.

Don't people know this is a city? What we need more of is asphalt, concrete, trash, noise and all the crap that goes with not caring about where you live.

Move to a rural area and grow organic vegetables all by hand, or with an ox powered plow blade.

"I think our governments will remain virtuous for many centuries; as long as they are chiefly agricultural; and this will be as long as there shall be vacant lands in any part of America. When they get piled upon one another in large cities, as in Europe, they will become corrupt as in Europe." - Thomas Jefferson

...includes forcing slaves to do agricultural work for him.

That is a strange definition of virtue.
