Loud crash roils quiet Roslindale street

Nobody goes down Hawthorne Street in Roslindale who doesn't belong there.

And that's part of the reason residents of the quiet street behind the Washington Irving School say they are rattled by a Sunday-night crash that ended with three damaged cars, a broken fence, a newly planted tree with part of its bark ripped off and a car in the Irving parking lot.

Residents report that sometime between 8 and 9 p.m., a woman roared the wrong way down Sycamore Street from Cummins Highway, then veered left onto Hawthorne - where she promptly plowed into the cars and the tree before coming to a stop over the curb and well into the Irving parking lot with four blown tires.

One resident said people in another house "dragged the driver out of the vehicle, told people nearby that 'everything was under control, she's a deputy' (or something to that effect) and brought her inside the house. Someone then drove the car to an off-street parking spot next to the house."

He added, "Everyone involved was inside before any respondents to multiple 911 calls arrived."

According to Boston Police, the owner of the car was summonsed to court and issued a citation for leaving the scene of an accident involving property damage and driving the wrong way on a one-way street.

The tree was re-rooted.
