The outbound commuter rail train left Back Bay station at 6:04 PM and was high-balling by the time it left Yawkey station. At about the 15 minute mark of the ride, the train suddenly and abruptly braked and stopped between stations. Information was sparse and communicated infrequently in public address announcements to the riding public. The first word came 30 minutes into the unplanned stop. At approximately the two-hour mark, an eastbound train was sent to take passengers back to the origin point of the trip. The next outbound train arrived some 60 minutes later and took approximately one-hour to make the 30-minute trip to the Natick-Wellsley stations from Back Bay. If there were 450 passengers on the original train as reported, they had all disappeared by the time the second train arrived in Back Bay. Only 50 passengers boarded the 9:40 PM train outbound on the Worcester line. No tickets were punched on any of the three trains noted above.
