What is the story behind their demolition?

The demolished buildings were part of the military installation (many structures remain). The private cottages are on the other end of the island.

Yes, the pictured dwellings were indeed on the military end of the island. The military reservation, now part of the islands park, is separated from the private cottages by an isthmus, which formerly the cottagers shouldn't cross and now the park-goers shouldn't cross.

These buildings in the foreground appear to be among the smaller military dwellings. They'd either be junior married officers' houses or senior married NCOs' duplexes. These are rear views so we can't tell duplex from single-family easily. The rear-most looks larger like a barracks or BOQ.

...some of the cottages were privately owned. The ownership has been grandfathered until the owner dies then the cottage gets demolished. I know a guy who owns one.

omg. i am so bummed that I didn't get out to peddocks as intended to see these before they got demolished. anyone have more pics of these places?
