Passover where you least expect it

The matzah was just out of camera range.

Dana Reichman reports she was surprised to turn an aisle at the Stop & Shop on American Legion Highway in Roslindale this morning to see a decent supply of Passover goods. She reports the stuff wasn't flying off the shelves, but it was only 7 a.m.

Stop & Shop in my neighborhood always has an aisle of gefilte, matzo kugel, schav, kosher soup mixes, macaroons, Kedem grape juice, and other such things. Of course, the Jewish population is appreciably higher around here.

It's got to be the largest collection of Passover goods this side of the Butcherie. Even the Hyde Park Shaw's has a couple of small shelves with Passover goods.

I think Dana was surprised because she doesn't recall ever seeing Passover food at that particular store.

You mean the one on the Watertown/Waltham/Newton line? It had its Passover section out over a month ago!

I believe you're thinking of a different store, on Pleasant Street, but you're correct about their selection. I go to that one occasionally. I was referring to the one on Watertown Street. The stuff is there year-round I think.

on the third shelf down are one of the most disgusting things ever. And why on earth would you need them when you can get all your KFP candy needs met with matzo crack?

Speaking of which, which stores have people found that have KFP chocolate chips?

This isn't unusual. Every Stop and Shop or Shaws I frequent have carried Passover items as long as I can remember.

Heh, edited: Didn't see you mention Shaw's at first.

Shabbat candles, however, a lot of them don't seem to regularly stock. I've been to several stores where the manager will tell me that they'll probably carry them closer to the holidays, and I tell them that we light them every week, and they say that it's not on the list of things they're supposed to stock for particular holidays.

Oh, and there was that one time that the Trader Joe's in Coolidge Corner had every product with a hechsher on it labeled with a "kosher for Passover!" shelf tag. Like, pastas, corn flakes, etc. I, um, might have sicced a rabbi on them to explain to them wassup.

The Allston/Brighton S&S (Everett St) has always had a large section of Kosher foods. Two sections, actually at this time of year.

That one tends to have a decent representation of traditional Ashkenazi foods (both for year round and for Passover) but doesn't actually have a thorough selection if you're observing Passover and need to only have KFP ingredients in your house for the week. Same if you only buy items with a hechsher during the year; there are going to be a lot of foods you can't find a suitable version of.

Has a whole aisle for Kosher stuff. Though I didn't check closely if they have Kosher for Pesach items all year. Probably not much, if at all.

have KFP stuff all year round. They'd have kosher for the rest of the year stuff most of the time.
