Phoenix, Stuff to merge into single glossy magazine

Layoffs are involved. The new pub will be called the Phoenix, rather than the Boston Stuff or Stuffnix. Key question: Will they still run those "adult services" ads?

Good riddance ... but I don't like the idea of it residually influencing the new 'glossy' Phoenix. Are they trying to compete with the equally vapid Improper Bostonian?

I thought they both wrote for the Phoenix.

those two wads of ads will merge into one big wad of ads?

It won't be the Phoenix without wads.

...since the old "hawker" days of the early 70s.

You forgot the occasional article from a local aging radical or review of a shitty band no one has ever heard of. You know, the stuff that separates them from the Herald. Well except maybe for the sports section.

Back when there was Boston After Dark, or The REal Paper was far better than the Phoenix. It's become just another rag of no particular significance.

Will the 'Adult' section of this new glossy give advice as to which posh tapas bar to bring your evening's escort?

Lonely overpaid overcompensating middle aged middle management men and unscrupulous 20 something 'platinum blondes' paying their way through a nonexistent college degree hardest hit.

"...middle aged professional Hindu gentleman seeking racy blonde with a penchant for fast cars and leather. Must be discreet."

(This ad actually appeared back in the day! I worked for TPI, taking in these ads, a looonnnggg time ago.)

MORE layoffs? That Mindich must really love firing people. He's giving Mitt Romney a run for his money

Not exactly:

Mittens fired people, turned companies around, and made money.

Mindich fired people, ran a company into the ground, and lost money.

I think he told me once that Mitt is the only GOP candidate they ever endorsed.

I don't recall them endorsing Romney, but I do remember them endorsing Bill Weld for Governor against John Silber.

I thought the Phoenix was great back in the day. Late 70s - early 80s if memory serves.

This merging and transformation is sad news for sure. BAD and the Phoenix were indeed often great back in the day (as was the RealP) and got much accomplished culturally and politically in this region. Indeed, the Phoenix has done so since. Only an ignorant and bitter ex-staff type of person like anon would try to persuade anyone otherwise. But Mindich (like the RealP owners) is a businessman, and this is what happens in business, creative destruction and all that sad rot.
