Restaurant next to Symphony Hall could get new owner, major overhaul

The Boston Licensing Board votes tomorrow on a request from local restaurant operator Douglas Bacon to buy the Siansa Pub on Westland Avenue, gut it and turn it into a place symphony attendees might want to go to.

Bacon said the area is currently "vastly underserved" with upscale dining options. If the board approves, he'll spend $500,000 to buy the pub - some $275,000 of that just for its liquor license. He said he'd then spend well in excess of $100,000 in renovations.

Bacon is also seeking permission to stay open until 2 a.m., as he does at most of his other restaurants.

Does this include all of Symphony 8 or whatever they're calling their bar/restaurant/speakeasy this week?

The place was good for a week after it opened but has been pretty awful ever since. Too expensive/far from campus/bad quality for college students, and too dirty/bar-like for the symphony crowd. Would be good to have a more upscale restaurant there. Either that or go back to Tigerlily's so the underage have somewhere to drink.

As a Symphony-area resident I agree - it definitely would be nice to see better dining options for Symphony visitors in general. The Back Bay is a quick walk away, but that means going down Mass Ave and (for that stretch between Symphony and Hynes) it's not the most appealing walk, especially if you're decked out. It has always seemed weird to me that Symphony hall is a bit of an oasis in the middle of a few blocks of ... not a whole lot if you're looking to have a sophisticated evening of music & dining. I love all the budget options in the area for NU and Berklee students -- and residents like me! -- but it does seem odd that BSO visitors have to hoof it a fair amount to go somewhere nicer.

The patrons at the symphony can take a cab to the back bay if Symphony 8 isn't good enough for them. They have the money, and the area around symphony hall should get any pricier than it is. And what happens when all the rich folks don't have concerts to go to over the summer? The business will fail horribly.
