Snow emergency in Boston at 9 p.m.

Among other things, the declaration means you can't park on a snow-emergency route, but otherwise you can use a cone, chair, fan, toilet or stuffed animal to save a space on the street for up to 48 hours after the snow emergency officially ends.

Use this city mapping system to find out which of your local roads double as snow emergency routes and where you can park at a discount (with a resident parking sticker on your car).

The official City of Somerville Facebook page says:

Somerville is not planning to declare a snow emergency. Accumulation will occur over an extended period, mostly at night and be followed by a couple of days of clear weather in which to clean up. If there are changes, we will get the word out. If you do go out please be careful and stay alert for changing weather.

So up to 10 inches, like, oh, right where we are.

No parking on side streets after 6 PM
No parking on Mass Ave after 10 PM

And don't even try the cone/chair/stuffed animal trick here.

Somerville sounds like it is having a sane and rational reaction, rather than the mad hysteria that has accompanied these moderate snowfalls in recent years, such as schools announcing cancellations days ahead of a snowfall that may or may not come, etc.

I wonder what the economic impact these Boston snow emergencies have on Boston area businesses? How did we survive without them? Channel 7 says we might get 2-4 inches?

Email from Jay Ash (City Manager)..

Subject: No Snow Emergency - Yet
Date: Sat, 29 Dec 2012 09:42:07 -0500

Based upon what we know now, we are not calling a snow emergency. We are being told from our weather service that we'll get 3-6 inches, with the heaviest snow coming after 6 pm. The storm looks like it will stretch over 12-18 hours, so our salt and sanding operations will take care of some of that accumulation. Given that there is no snow on the ground now andand no snow in the forecast for the remainder of the week, we believe we can handle this storm without a snow emergency. If the track or predicted intensity changes over the next couple of hours, that could change. I'll keep you posted.

is an unfair tax on the residents of Boston. Check out who the tow companies donate to during an election year.

Fully agreed, this said having worked at a towing company while I was in college.

Ugh. Gross.

I can't find anything about Cambridge declaring a snow emergency. I really hope not. It'd just be the icing on my day off.

I wish each town had a timestamped web page that said explicitly if there is currently a snow emergency or not.

Searching for a lack of an announcement is unreliable and a waste of time.
