Too soon, Marky Mark, too soon

Our own homegrown tough guy and Whitey wannabe is now apologizing for saying if he'd been on Flight 11 out of Logan on 9/11 - like he was originally planning to be - things would have turned out differently.

Listen, Marky Pal. I know/have connections to 3 different victims of 9/11. Don't go talking dirt. It demeans them, and demeans you.

He'd be dead.

A group of passengers went after the hijackers: some of them were large, one of them (brother of a friend of mine) could have flown the plane had they recovered control.

They are all dead.

Life ain't a heroic movie, Ramby Mark.

Daniel Lewin was an ex-Israeli Special Forces soldier seated in first class. Really the person best-trained to fight back in that kind of situation. And fight back he did.

He was also one of the first to die on 9/11. Long before the plane ever reached New York.

I believe part of coping with tragedy - especially one on the scale of 9/11 - is to consider what you would have done. It takes away some of the helplessness. There's nothing wrong with saying you would have tried to do something differently knowing what you know now, but it's ridiculous to say that you would have stopped it.

If you suddenly fell backwards in time and found yourself on a hijacked plane, knowing everything you know now, there's really no chance that things would have gone differently. And that's one of the most painful truths of the whole thing.

@Arborway: I agree with the knowing what you know now theory. Recalling this from memory, didn't some of the cockpit recordings and calls from passengers to loved ones indicate that the hijackers told passengers to remain calm and nobody will get hurt? I think Wahlberg and anybody else would've had a hard time rallying a majority of other passengers to overthrow the hijackers, since crashing a jetliner into a building was for the most part unfathomable at the time. I think most would have assumed they were going to land somewhere and authorities on the ground would take over. The Flight 93 passengers only reacted because they had gotten word that it might be there only hope after the WTC disasters. I'm sure Wahlberg wishes he had kept quiet, or at minimum prefaced his remarks with "knowing what I know now."

They were told they were on their way back to the airport. Back then, you would assume that you would be held hostage for maybe a few days, or flown to some random country, but that the best thing you could do was sit tight and keep your head down. I can only imagine watching other passengers die in front of you would reenforce that to an extreme degree.

But realistically, it was all over as soon as the hijackers got inside the cockpit doors. Even with the full-knowledge of history and the knowledge that you have absolutely everything to lose by not fighting back, there's just no way to change that outcome.

The company makes a point of sticking to Danny's original values, and there are various remembrance and volunteer opportunities arranged every September 11.

I want to point out that the fighting back on Flight 93 might have prevented them from pursuing their original plan of crashing into another building for more casualties.

However for Flight 11, it as everyone taking history from the 1970's, there wouldn't be a sufficient uprising to prevent it from happening. Mark would likely have done nothing.

Headed for DC, according to this: http://www.nps.gov/flni/historyculture/index.htm

They came within 20 minutes by air.

But information and the time table were key there. Flight 93 found out exactly what had happened in NYC and the pentagon and decided they needed to act since they found out the true terms of the hijackers.

It's easy to talk a tough guy game after, but the other flights had no idea the intentions of the hijackers. For all they knew they were headed to cuba for a unintended vacation while demands were sent for prisoners releases.

He would have started crying like a pussy. Then he would have started screaming at his assistant to do something. The the world would have been out one shitty actor that liked to torment black kids when he was 15.

Fuck him.

What am I hiding from? And probably unlike you, I've actually spent time around the man. I only wish I could write about the experience.

I know the family, for better and worse. Never knew any of them to torment anyone. Racial tensions were high back then, Black kids could get a hard time in a white neighborhood but white kids weren't getting a pass in the black parts of Dot. The Wahlbergs lived right on the dividing line of the two hoods.

Every brother and the one sister I knew were all straight up fighters. Scrappers.
(And this is just a fact, nothing I hold in the highest esteem.)

I 'd venture that Mark isn't the most eloquent person in the world and got recorded speaking aloud what many of us have contemplated silently. His almost unique experience in dodging that jet-fueled bullet only makes it more emotional.

My opinion, based on knowing (but not being close to) the family for 25+ years is that I wouldn't count Mark out of that fight if he was there.
He's no punk or wanna-be tough guy.

Good guy from a good family, overall.

I guess "good guy from a good family" is all relative based on where you grew up and where your prejudices lie. Personally, Marky Mark lost me when he referred to Good Will Hunting as a movie about an "effing kid doing math."

I did my share of stupid crap as a kid, but race-baiting and throwing around the N word rises a bit above that threshold.

Saying fuck him on the Internet. I'd bet the farm you wouldn't say it to his face unless you were looking for a lawsuit.

Having spent half my life around celebrities I have had no problem saying fuck you to some of them.It does not take long for the stars in your eyes to fade and you realize that they were assholes before they got famous. The they just become assholes with money.

And as far as a lawsuit, if I said fuck you to Marky Mark's face and he hit me, who do you think would come out on the winning end?

As I said, I knew the family before any celebrity. You'd win in the lawsuit and as I said I'd bet it's the only reason you'd do it.
I'll meet you at Walhburgers and you can tell his brother or sister how you feel. They're there every day.
Name the time.

btw, I've worked with rock and roll and film "stars" as a stagehand and grip. I know all about them and you're not enlightening anyone by saying a leopard doesn't change his spots.

My position is he's a decent guy who made some childish mistakes in a racially antagonistic environment.

Let's review:
Juvie record, some house of corrections time that straightened him out, and one ill-formed recent comment the other day.

Other than that he's a family man and a businessman. He gives to and visits the youth center that he credits with turning his life around.

See you at Walburgers or zip it.

..."What a really dumb thing to say." My second thought was, "Yeah, but in addition to the other great things we might fantasize about coming to pass, 'The Happening' would likely not have been made.

It's natural to wish that you could have prevented 9-11, if given the chance. It's illusions of grandeur to think that you actually could of. The sad truth is that the US government and all of its agencies couldn't prevent it, not because of any conspiracy theories but because of simple hubris and incompetence.
