Poop wars on Pinckney Street

Mike the Mad Biologist reports that a resident of the Beacon Hill street got so fed up with bags of dog shit being left all along the street that he or she put out a trash can in the hopes that dog owners would use it - and city trash collectors would empty it. Naturally, this being Beacon Hill, somebody else promptly put a note on the can that while the idea is laudable, the can "looks pretty ugly" and should be removed.

I'm completely surprised by every aspect of this story, said absolutely nobody.

This would be a violation of the neighborhood's street-furniture policy, me thinks.

Pretty clever to call tidy bags of dogshit "street furniture"

....as opposed to the bag-free method of leaving-dog-shit-all-over-the-place that I usually see around town.

I wonder if anyone has submitted this charmer yet.

I especially love the vague, "there has to be a better solution!" So. . .think one up and propose it? I'd rather have to step around an ugly trashcan than dodge piles of dog shit.

I like to think of the fact that someone went to their computer, selected a 36pt font and color, put paper in their printer, printed it out, took it downstairs with them and placed it on the barrel.

Maybe it's an older retired person who has plenty of time to 'patrol' the street they live on? From time to time I've encountered people who think they own the street where they reside or own the public park they happen to frequent and the rest of us are intruders trespassing on their territory. To be fair though, selecting a font size and color takes less than 5 seconds and probably only 30 seconds to print something like this out. And, fyi, in most printers, you don't have to load the paper each time you print. Not really that much of an effort.

At least both people are concerned about the quality of life of their street. I don't understand why folks treat public spaces as 1) trash cans and garbage pits or 2) as an extension of their living room (i.e., loud cell phone conversations while walking down the street). What is with the contempt or privatization of public spaces?

The original note specifically asked for people's feedback, which makes somewhat dubious the argument that leaving said feedback was obnoxious or passive-aggressive or creepy.

I'll take neighbors who care for the street, even if their PR skills are lacking, over those who don't give a damn any day.

I don't care if there's already lots of dog poo on the street when you leave yours behind, it's disgusting and irresponsible to leave it behind! No one in the world thinks it's okay except the people who do it, and I'm still trying to figure out how they can justify it. I have a blog dedicated to investigating dog poop and raise awareness of it, http://picturesofdogdoodoo.blogspot.com. We try to have a laugh about it too, but in my neighborhood there's dog doo everywhere and it's gross!
