Boston Latin Academy, other schools get 'threatening and disturbing' letters from Texas

Update: The Globe reports the letters have rambling references to al-Queda, Nazis and "poisonous organs in animals."

Among the schools receiving letters: Beethoven, Ohrenberger, Kilmer and Lyndon in West Roxbury, Irving and Bates in Roslindale, BTU Pilot School in Jamaica Plain, Charlestown High School, Dorchester Academy and the Harbor School.

BPS is robocalling parents this afternoon with a vague message that several schools got "suspicious" letters today. Remain calm, BPS says, but expect added police presence at city schools, just in case.

In a statement, BPS and Boston Police say the schools got similar letters, all postmarked in Texas:

Today, several different Boston Public Schools received suspicious letters that contain some threatening and disturbing content. Our schools have strong protocols in place to isolate suspicious letters and immediately notified the Boston Police. BPD is investigating the matter and has determined there are no substances contained in the letters. The letters, addressed to public schools in different areas of the city, all appear to be the same and are all postmarked from Texas.

Boston Police are collecting the letters and will investigate the source. We do not know of any credible threat to our schools. We are working with the JTTF and are processing the letters. School officials are isolating any letters with a Texas address and are contacting the police for pick up. To ensure families are aware, BPS has contacted all families through its automated phone message system.

Out of an abundance of caution, parents and students can expect to see an increased security presence in and around public schools. While we remain vigilant and are taking appropriate action, we reiterate there is no credible physical threat and the letters did not contain any substances.

They're always talking secession...can't we just let them go?

Then we can invade them for the oil!

Which students or former students have visited Texas recently?

Exam school kids are smart enough to use someone else's address and postmark so they don't get busted. They are not smart enough to avoid posting "Campus tour of rice is off da HOOK" on Facebook.

of lawyers out there who would love to cash in if something happened at any of these schools - even if it was later proven to be totally unrelated to the Texas letters - and there wasn't the "increased police presence".

It's called CYA, even if it's just "security theater".

YA moved to Mattapan 4 years ago to the site of the now-closed Lewenberg Middle School. I know it's hard to keep track of where schools are located these days or what they're called.
