Citizen complaint of the day: There's no need to be uncivil about your trash

Apparently somebody on Hardwick Street in Brighton is upset that people keep tossing their trash in his trash can. But this citizen complaint of the day is not from him, for he filed no complaint. Instead, he posted a note on his trash can:

Not a public trash can. Back the fuck away!!

And that riled up a concerned citizen, who did file a complaint about this "garbage and profanity."

A city inspector actually went out to Hardwick Street to take a look at this affront to common decency, but reports he "found no violation on 5-2-13."

every time i put out my trash, i come back later and find that people have put their trash into the barrel after it had been emptied... but if you leave the barrel out for a long time then you should expect people to use it.

Exactly...would you rather people toss their trash on the ground outside your house or put it in your barrel? I mean, how much trash are we talking about? If it's a whole bag after the barrel had been emptied, then I can see where he's coming from. And if so, how often does this happen? If a lot, I would either take my barrel in right away (though one might have left for work by then) or take a personal day to lie in wait for the offender....then pounce!

Um, neither?

If you brought the soda cup there, you can bring it somewhere else.

why would you bring it somewhere else if there is a trash can right there? and no possible harm can come from you putting it there?

Why would I begrudge someone throwing a Doritos wrapper in the empty trash barrel I had left out for a few hours? Some people are really wrapped up too tight in this town.

People will throw sticky, smelly items in trash cans that could stain the actual barrel. I don't want people stinking up my barrels with dog poop, soda stains, or pork fried rice from your last nights A27 from the local DragonKing.

Sure, an empty bottle in my recycling bin? Go right ahead.

And was shocked that one street basically had 90% of its residents placing trashbags without barrels on the street during trash day. The street was right on the Ashland line. I couldn't believe it.

What's wrong with that? Just as long as they are putting it out the morning of trash day it's fine. I'm in Natick and everyone does that here. I'm actually the only one who puts it in a barrel because I usually put it out the night before.

1. It looked horrible and can still smell if it is uncovered trash.

2. Animals can still get in those bags during daylight hours.

3. Sometimes the trash gets delayed and the trash sits on the sidewalk longer.

4. It means that those people probably don't have barrels on the side of their homes? I mean, are these people leaving the trash in bags wherever they keep their trash near their house? Wouldn't it be easier to just pull out a barrel?

5. This was about 11am, and I assume many of those bags were sitting on the sidewalk in the hot sun for a few hours, maybe even over night.

to dump your shit into other people's bins, especially if it's a regular occurrence. The man is correct, it's not a public bin. He's probably fed up with the situation.

And whoever complained about the note with profanity needs to get a life.

On the other hand, I'm betting that there would be less of a problem with random passers-by tossing trash in his barrel if it were properly covered. If the lid is broken or lost, it's time to replace the barrel.

The main reason I bought one of those barrels with a built-in flip-top cover, similar to the city-issued recycling barrels was that I was sick of the lids getting damaged or lost. It was WAY worth the investment because 8 years later it's still intact - no rat holes gnawed in the bottom, and the lid is still attached and undamaged.

And who makes sure the lid is reclosed after the garbage truck comes, and before the owner gets back from work?

Since the barrel in the photo is full to overflowing, I sincerely doubt that the problem is folks throwing trash into it in the time between collection and when the homeowner gets home to move it off the street. (Not to mention that the barrel in the photo isn't on the sidewalk anyway, so presumably has not been put out for collection.)

On the other hand, it does seem like people are going well up the homeowner's driveway to put stuff in that barrel, and that's unquestionably rude!

All the beautiful people, who have moved here the last couple of years, go out of their way to pile all their bags of trash in front of my house, which is on a corner, come trash day.
The bottle dudes tear open all the bags and leave trash strewn about in front of my house. I have to sweep it all up because these asswipes don't even own a broom.

should tell these Yuppies, when they rent or purchase property, the trash pick up days. I too have these no brainers putting their trash out all days of the week because:
1. They don't know when trash day is.
2. They have no place to store trash in their "luxury" condos.
3. They have no respect for their neighbors or neighborhood.
And you are correct, they don't own snow shovels, so why would they own a broom.

The guy can put a note on his barrel if he wants to. What do you care? He didn't make a formal complaint, so I don't know why you guys are all up on him and saying its his own fault. Who cares? He put a note, and that's how he's addressing it, leave it be...

The person who complained about profanity on the other hand... what a loser. Please fuck off and get a life.
