Council to consider watered-down non-ban on kids at cage fights

The City Council on Wednesday considers an ordinance that would ban children under 16 from any cage-fighting matches that make their way to Boston - unless the kids are accompanied by a parent.

City Council President Steve Murphy had originally proposed an ordinance that would bar everybody under 18 from the matches, with no exceptions. Murphy cites not just spurting blood and violence but the neo-Nazi, homophobic and pro-rape messages he says the fighters often tattoo on their arms or use as banter.

The council's meeting begins at noon in its fifth-floor chambers in City Hall.

Next step wrestling. I think Murph got punched in the head too many times as a kid. These clowns on the council don't deserve to be mayor.

With school starting in less than three weeks I would hope our so called leaders would be more concerned with the battle for the orange line that happens on a daily basis.

should be ashamed of itself. And the voters should be ashamed for voting in such clowns. Is this an extra-lame attempt at garnering 'progressive' votes? What are they going to propose banning next? Would Mr. Murphy propose banning anyone under 18 or 16 and under from rap venues in the city due to the violence, hate, misogyny and homophobia many rappers promote?

There are many quality of life issues for city residents the council could help address, this one doesn't even rank in the top 50.

"...banning anyone under 18 or 16 and under from rap venues in the city..."

I'd be okay with this.

Yeah I'd actually be happier with shows without teenyboppers. 21+ or 18 and under only.

All ages and 18+ shows actually hurt venues due to reduced liquor sales.

If local colleges with performance space had more shows for underage kids it will encourage interest in the school, keep kids in a more controlled and safe environment and be more profitable for the institution.

Here on my planet, the venues and show promoters, nearly all of which which are privately operated businesses, are perfectly free to offer whatever mix of all ages, 18+, and 21+ shows they think will maximize their long-term profits, and some of them offer all ages and 18+ shows. That they do so would suggest that 18+ and all ages shows help them rather than hurt them.

Reduced liquor sales mean increased soda sales. They both cost nothing to the venue and get sold at absurdly extreme markups. The venues don't care if you're buying peanuts and beer or cotton candy and soda. Asses in seats means money.

Not bringing kids means not creating the fans of tomorrow that will come out when they get old enough because they'll already have made other choices on how they get their fix of MMA or they'll be a fan of something they aren't kept away from. Thus, come one, come all.

While walking home from work yesterday in front of the St Francis House homeless shelter some homeless woman yelled "You ain't Muslim you faggot!" at some other homeless guy. I will be sure ASAP to report this person to my councilman so this horrifying epidemic of bad language can be cured.

Seriously though it's a good idea to prevent underage kids from being involved in more of the brutal cage matches (I'd support the 18+ admission actually) but complaining about fighting words and beer advertisements is pretty far.

Seriously? Banning kids from cage fights? So, the WWE can come to the Garden....just not if it plans to run a "Hell in the Cell" match that event? How stupid.

One of the topics brought up in the mayoral debates this year is the fact that events like these have a billion hoops to already jump through and it completely discourages them from ever wanting to bring their tax dollars, event fees, and fan dollars to Boston. What's one more hoop, right?

Meanwhile, the kid just goes next door to one of a billion restaurants in the area and watches the event on pay-per-view anyways...OR EVEN ON NETWORK TV SOMETIMES! For the past 2 years, the UFC has run the occasional show directly on Fox. Oh my, won't someone think of the children?

Gun violence, homelessness, drug epidemic - and this is what they are focusing on? C'mon!!

I suppose a government ban is a bad idea, but then again, I can't imagine anyone I know bringing a kid to one of these things. But that's just me. Didn't George Carlin say 'I would rather have my kid watch two people making love rather than two people trying to kill each other?'

I'm not a parent so I'm a bit stymied by this stipulation -

unless the kids are accompanied by a parent

I hate to wag my finger and be the "what's wrong with kids today?!" lady but who are these parents sending their 15 year old kids to cage matches by themselves?

Vote for new Candidates for Boston City Council rather than reelect incumbents or former City Councilors running once again. Most of the daily operations of Boston City Council are run by the 100 or so appointed staff, very few if any with the software and technical skills that could open a greater dialogue for more citizens interacting with the Councilors. Current Councilors resist advancements that are available, like Captioning for hard of hearing on the videos of Public Meetings of Boston City Council
