Despite Irish wake, Purple Shamrock could rise again

The owner of the now shuttered Purple Shamrock across from Faneuil Hall says he's in a furious search to find a new location in which to revive the watering hole.

"After 34 years, we'd like to open up another Purple Shamrock," Michael Glynn told the Boston Licensing Board this morning.

Glynn had to meet with the board to explain why it shouldn't strip him of the bar's liquor license, given that the place closed last September, victim of the landlord's eagerness to let TD Bank open yet another one of its branches.

Glynn told board members he's looked at five or six different locations but that all proved unsuitable for one reason or another.

"We're not trying to hold onto [the license] and have the value go through the roof," he said, adding that if he can't find a good place for the revived Purple Shamrock, he would attempt to sell the license.

The bar held an "Irish wake" in September and sold hoodies that said "The Purple Shamrock, 1980-2012" on them.

The board decides Thursday whether to give Glynn more time to find a new location at which to use his license.

TD Bank actually replaced McDonald's; the Purple Shamrock space is sitting empty with FOR RENT signs all over the windows.

should institute a blight tax on empty retail spaces. Seems to many owners are fine with forgoing rents to just wait for a payday down the road at some future time, and valuable land is going unused.

Use it or pay up.

I agree with the concept, but reverse it

Commercial real estate tax is based on how much you are making on the property. So if your retail or office space is empty, your taxes go down. That needs to be changed so they are taxed on the value, occupied or not...
