End of the line for Davis Square bar?
By adamg on Mon, 05/06/2013 - 8:42am
On Friday, the Rosebud Bar and Grill, which is located behind the Rosebud Diner, posted this to its Facebook page:
Update on the sale and closing of the Rosebud: Between last night and this morning something has changed the closing of the sale was scheduled to happen on the 15th of May. But I was informed by the owners of the property that things have changed and we will still be here for the next month or so, maybe longer it everything falls apart with the sale(fingers crossed).

It was inevitable.
The current Rosebud setup is just not douche-y enough for the Davis of 2013.

To make it clearer that we're talking about the bar behind the diner, not the diner itself.
The bar behind the diner
is actually a great dive venue, with excellent bar food.
Some of the posts on the Bar & Grill FB page make it sounds like the whole thing, including the vintage diner, is being sold.
I worried that with construction of the "Greek" condos next door on Cutter Ave (the building always flew a Greek flag, even while under construction) the music venue (Rosebud Bar & Grill) would be forced out of business.
I get the feeling that live music is being squished out of Davis, probably by increasing rents. Plus, the new bars can make way more money by selling large volumes of $8 pints. Johnny D's is the venerable survivor, and you have the Somerville Theater for large acts (900 seats), but the Rosebud is really the only venue regularly booking smaller local bands.
Yes, both were bought
But plans are to keep the diner open, although that could mean just keeping the exterior the same with a whole new menu.
Live music is still quite alive in Davis
If you bother to look for it.
The Burren hosts music in both the front and back rooms - a Tues open mic, as well as music other nights of the week, and their Sun night Singer/Songwriter series has been running for about 10 years now.
And with the busking laws in Somerville recently changed, independent street musicians can more easily play in the square legally.
I have a nostalgic love for the Rosebud, but if they do end up closing the bar/music area, there are other options.
I meant both the diner and the back room, actually
Both are supposed to close for several months of renovations when (if?) this sale is completed.
It is true that I am of an older fashion.
Much that I love has been destroyed or sent into exile.
Maybe
they just didn't have enough "small plates for sharing" or things served "on a board" or maybe they didn't have "mixologists" making "craft cocktails" out of home made syrups and "glacial ice from Gloucester." Some Edison lights haning over the bar would have helped, too. And not enough 22-year-olds with beards.
