Not just the Square...
... but the traffic was backed up in every direction for over a mile.
We could see the smoke plume from Coolidge Hill Road at about 4:45; when we got stuck in traffic at the Square we could see the smoke, fire trucks, police and ambulances going over behind the Watertown Yards (the 57/504 turnaround, former A line terminus). The river roads coming into Watertown Square (Charles River, Pleasant, Nonantum, and Watertown/California) were backed up a mile; the other feeder roads (Mount Auburn, Arsenal, North Beacon, and Main) were backed up at least that far, Galen ended up closing (and Watertown residents got a robocall to that effect), and all intersecting roads, including Newton Corner and the Pike, were bollixed for at least 2 hours. I'm on a side road about a mile west of the Square and we had cars idling next to my driveway for about 5 minutes around 6:30.
Galen street fire
This was my family home for generations so many memories of those we have lost. My father was home at the time of the fire and got out safely. We are most thankful for this. Thank you to all the neighbors firefighters and policeman on the scene. 84 Galen Street rip!!!
Galen Street Fire
Having grown up at 83 Galen Street and my family knowing your family for couple of generations, this house was recognized watching the news last night.
Thankfully your Dad got out safely. Thoughts and prayers are with you all.
