UPDATE: BFD spokesman Steve MacDonald reports: "The injured firefighter was released this afternoon. He has 2nd-3rd degree burns to hand and thigh. He wanted to be home with family for the holiday. Cause still under investigation."

Firefighters experienced a tense few moments at a fire at 14 Pond Circle overnight when a firefighter briefly went missing (listen to the Mayday call).

The fire, reported at 1 a.m., sent one firefighter to the hospital with third-degree burns on his legs, the Boston Fire Department reports. He is expected to survive, but will spend Thanksgiving in the hospital, the department says. The Globe reports he fell through a floor.

After he was found, firefighters were ordered out of the building and the department concentrated on keeping the fire from spreading to nearby homes.

The department estimates damage of $650,000 to the single-family home. Nobody was home at the time of the fire, the cause of which remains under investigation.
