And what exactly happened? Was it random act of violence, robbery gone bad, or something else?

It's nice to have donations for the funeral, but if you cannot afford a funeral then why not a cremation or simple service in a church. would certainly cost much less than the $10,000 needed for their goal.
Raise money towards other needs of the family, not to spend it on a funeral..
Just my thoughts, and not being disrespectful to his untimely death.

A Massachusetts funeral with no visitation, no wake, no casket is almost $3000. For breakdown of costs: http://www.thefuneralsite.com/ResourceCenters/Cost...

And for many, it is an important part of the mourning process. Funeral ritual "helps us acknowledge the reality of the death, gives testimony to the life of the deceased, encourages the expression of grief in a way consistent with the culture's values, provides support to mourners, allows for the embracing of faith and beliefs about life and death, and offers continuity and hope for the living."

The ceremony is for the living, not for the dead. If people want to help the family at such a terrible time, why begrude them?

The State Attorney Generals Office pays $6500.00 towards the funeral of a homicide victim !!

...who nine times out of ten happen to be gangbangers shot by rival gangbangers. Boston public schools can barely afford textbooks, $6500 would buy 20 laptops. 20 laptops for a disadvantaged inner city school or a lavish burial on taxpayer's dime - decision, decisions... Guess the state values gangbangers more than it values children, go figure.

Really????? Another jerk!!!! What is so funny about another young person losing his life and a mother losing her only child??? Did your mother raise you that way? How would your mother feel if this was you? Don't be so ignorant and insensitive! Know your facts and find some class.

My friend, words of advice.....Do your research before spewing off at the mouth and showing your ignorance. Steven was an innocent bystander and might I add a hero. He was walking by and was trying to separate/pull a guy off of a woman that was being beaten gruesomely. As Steven approached and shouted to the guy to stop, Steven grabbed the bad guy's arm and attempted to pull him off the victim and stop the violent beating, however the bad guy used his free arm to reach into his waistline and simultaneously pulled a gun out and shot Steven without warning. Steven was a great kid, had the hugest heart and was liked by many. Sadly he died in the arms of a stranger, who held him until he passed. Shortly before Steven's attempt to break up the altercation, he was on the phone with his mom, and sadly the connection was lost. His mother called back several times to only get Steven's voicemail, until a stranger answered to report that her son, whom she was speaking to only minutes before, was dead. REALLY....how does something so terrible happen????? I understand that IDIOTS like you exist, but hopefully this is a lesson for you! Think before you speak....know your facts and get some class. It sounds like you may have missed that lesson or perhaps were never taught. You are a jack ass fool, but, luckily have life and the ability to change. Do the right thing and become a better person before you hurt others!
