Hey, remember that Seinfeld episode where George and some other guy try to get into the same parking space?

Parking fight near South Station

Alan Hoffman watched two guys try to get into the same space near South Station this afternoon. Both refused to budge, at least until the police arrived to try to sort things out.

UPDATE: Eric Fitzgerald reports:

Resolution: backing in black car wins. Uses spot for <15 min after 30 min standoff. Yep.

Life imitates art:

H/t Jonathan Berk for remembering that episode.

That's South Street, a few blocks away from the station, in front of Les Zygomates and also the restaurant you can see in the picture named "Beijing Kyoto." I have never seen anyone inside of that restaurant even though it is usually lit up like that.

South street is not really a few blocks away from south station. It is essentially one street over, or one block away.

Also in picture is Trattoria Andiamo, home of the tasty $1.19 breakfast sandwich!

In the end who got the space?

Figure the guy backing in probably was first to the spot and the guy behind was trying to sneak in.

However, they say possession is 9/10ths of the law...

Wish people would leave their sense of entitlement at home for once.. I kno its Boston and its a free for all with little courtesy but shit man come on.. Why waste your Monday afternoon in this perdicement.. Sheesh..

This happens SO often, as does people pulling up on your ass when you've signalled that you're going to parallel park and are ready to back up, then being totally confused as to why you'd be pulling into the space correctly.

I really hope the officer ticketed the person for trying to head into a parking space, but I don't put much faith in Boston police knowing how driving works.

What about when they see you're about to pull out of a curbside space and they plop RIGHT in front of you so you have to maneuver around them instead of having the goddam common courtesy to wait behind you and THEN pull forward? So freakin' rude!

How do you know the person who tried to back in didn't attempt to put his/her car in reverse and gun it 30mph backwards 100 feet and try to cut the other person off? I don't have much faith in social service workers to understand that concept on the internet though. :)

The person backing in would have the right of way. Because that's how you get into a parking spot, regardless of how big it is.

(And I'll see your comment there and raise it to some crack about you only pulling into parking spots when it's to get donuts or something.)

Are you imagining, Eeka, that there's some law requiring motorists to pull into curbside parking only backwards?

I'd be fascinated to see a reference for that.

The driver's manual says to enter parking spaces correctly. It also alludes to everything in there being a law, but most of it isn't cited specifically.

There's always the option to ticket people for more generic things like exiting or entering a roadway unsafely, failure to yield, etc.

That police should be able to ticket or arrest people not only for things that are violations of actual laws, but for violation of laws about things similar to what people did, or for offending local customs?

Are you sure that's a good standard for law enforcement?

What moron pulls into a space front-first? I have never seen anyone who knows what they're doing pull right in front-first unless the space was HUGE. Backing in so simple and only requires one reverse and done. I'm not even kidding when I say it is superior, because I have yet to see someone pull in front-first and not take 5 minutes.

I sometimes pull in head first. If it is a low curb, and I can roll the front passengers side tire up over the curb and drop right down into the space. If it is done properly, it should take only one swing. I don't recommend this for amateurs.

Who has another moron tailgating him.

Yes, it's superior to pull in backwards, especially if it's a tight fit. But this is obviously not the case in the picture above, and if you have any kind of control of your car and an extra four feet or so, it's very easy to parallel park frontwards.

If you drive much, you've probably been in the situation where you would like to park but the fellow behind you is following so closely that you just know that if you put your blinker on and pull ahead of the space he'll go right up there with you and then you have a whole new problem trying to get him to either back up (impossible with a line of traffic) or pass you (impossible if it's a single-lane road and there's oncoming traffic).

In that case, the solution is simple: park frontwards. Zip in, pull back, and done. There's no need for it to take more than a few seconds. If it does, you're doing it wrong.

If I'm being tailgated and I want to park, I put on my signal and stop before the space (but not so far that someone else could pull in while I'm blocking traffic for them). Usually someone up my ass so much doesn't have the patience to wait me out while I make sure they aren't going to keep creeping up with me. At that point, they'll usually go around me in a huff or stay put while I pull up fully and start to back in (usually only wait if there's no way around me even unsafely).

Or pull around in front of you and back into the space.
