As if massive gridlock caused by the Arborway crash weren't bad enough

Downed tree

Lucy Fitzgerald reports a tree came plummeting down on Hyde Park Avenue just past Walk Hill this evening. She reports she got to see it up close, because she walked home from Forest Hills, rather than jump on a bus that wouldn't be going anywhere. "Eight square blocks of hell today," she concludes.

Another view of the tree.

Meanwhile, Centre Street in JP wasn't doing much better, even around 7 p.m., as Ben Rey shows us:

Is that tree in the Irish Veterans Cemetery? That stretch of HPA used to drive me nuts. Seems like the volunteers who "maintained" the cemetery had the capacity to stick flags on the graves twice a year and that was about it. In the winter, almost everyone else would shovel out and clear their sidewalks, and this stretch was never clear. It filled up with trash and leaves during the rest of the year. I'm sure the parts of the tree that don't block the road and the tangled fence underneath it will remain that way.

was hellacious this afternoon [3:3-PM]. Absolute wall to wall vehicles. I was BS and never travel on it at that time of day, now I feel better knowing what was up.

I would venture that the traffic on this part of Centre St at Hyde Sq is not as a result of the Arborway crash. It's been this tough at that hour of the day for the past week or two. I think the signals all along Centre St are screwed up. Not helping are pedestrians just walking across the street when and where they damn well feel like it.

The pedestrians have every right to be there, just as much as you. They are citizens, it is a public space that is open to everyone.

Who are you to tell people that they cannot walk on the public commons?

sure, the pedestrians have every right to walk out from between parked cars and into oncoming traffic that has a green light, especially at that first intersection which jams up both centre st and columbus ave, everywhere but a crosswalk, taking their sweet time. youre right, there is no law against it. that doesn't mean it's not a giant pain in the ass, though.

There are rules of the street for all methods of travel, vehicular, bicycle, scooters, walking... All I ask is that everyone follow them. I do. Well, I don't ride a bicycle, but I drive a car, ride a motorcycle, and walk. And yes, I follow the rules. If it doesn't affect others, I do jaywalk, but I take into consideration others around me. Others should do the same and stop being selfish idiots.
