Local artist says he got the Oprah treatment at a Newbury Street clothing store

Which is why he says he'll never shop there again.

Damn
I thought the article was going to say he got a 'free' crappy new car but had to pay all the taxes on it.
nope, he has no communications skills and thinks it's racism
Instead of saying "The staff in the menswear department were busy talking and would not help me; could you assist, or find someone who will, please?", he just repeats himself like the people he's talking to are idiots (because clearly, as retail employees, they must be dumber than him, an ICA artist!)
Frankly, the post smacks a bit of "I'm so gosh-darned important and your staff wouldn't pay attention to me!"
I know some retail employees who get this kind of BS from customers all the time who think that said employee must drop everything to help THEM, despite clearly being busy helping someone else or doing something necessary. Good retail employees recognize your presence/greet you, and say "I will be with you in a moment, once I've finished ______", but not everyone is this well-trained.
Badly trained staff? Maybe. Racist treatment? No. Drop the complex, pal.
Yeah, silly 50-year-old black
Yeah, silly 50-year-old black man, recognizing racism when it's directed at him. I'm sure you have much more experience with the issue than he does.
Seems like you share the racist sentiment
Not only do you seem to think you know what it's like to be a Black man in America, but you also seem to think you know exactly what happened when you weren't there, and you think it's your place to tell this Black man that he certainly didn't experience racism, because, well, you say he didn't, so he should just be quiet and stop mentioning racism, since people who don't deal with racism on a daily basis prefer to not hear about it.
He went into a store and didn't act the way that you are saying he should have acted, so that's his own fault. If only he'd have acted the way a white person is telling him to act, he wouldn't have had a problem! How's that not racism?
We are dealing with racism
We are dealing with racism right now. You are accusing us of not understanding the pain, because you think we are white. Because in your mind, whites don't understand that complex issue.
I know, Irish never felt that pain. The Saxon never felt that pain. The Celts have no idea what that's like. We aren't dealing with that pain right now, as white on black self defense is turned in to a national circus, while the staggering black on white CRIME is ignored.
Ya, bro - we got noooo clue. Nobody knoooooows, the trouble you seeen. Listen, don't be a cry baby. Slavery ended a long time ago. We have a black president. How dare you accuse us of being a racist country?
You're the racist, just like Oprah. Oprah got mad because a employee didn't let her play with a $30,000.00 purse. This guy was ignored by staff. Oh, such racism!! Oh, the pain!!! I wouldn't let her touch a $30,000.00 purse either. Nothing to do with her color. IT'S A $30,000.00 ITEM. You buy or you go, simple. Nobody wants to pay that much for something that had everybody's mittens on it. That's a serious investment. What if she dropped it? That's why it was in a case. She wanted to look at it, she had eyes.
LoL I seriously doubt you know what racism is. You've never been owned or barred from voting for your color. You never got lynched for what religion you are. You're just liberal pretending to understand something and strapping it to everything thing you read. A man falls in a park and white guy walks by laughing, it's racism. Ignore the fact that people of all color are on Youtube, laughing at people of all color, as they fall from chairs or hurt themselves doing stupid stunts.
You're delusional, that's that.
Wow. Ricardi is a great
Wow. Ricardi is a great store. The owner is a little off putting at times as he's an old school Italian dude (I think Italian) but I've never ever had problems with the staff. I'm a big fan of Nudie jeans and always buy mine there but when I first went to the store to buy some I had no idea which pair to get and a very helpful staff member not only recommended a bunch of different pairs but suggested style options and including hemming free. I support the store entirely, sorry that this dude had a bad experience but it does not represent their service at all.
holy....
run-on sentence!
Got dat wmd: can we assume
Got dat wmd: can we assume that you, like Mr. Locke, are an African American male? Because if you aren't, your shopping experience testimonial only makes his more vile.
Vile? Please. That's
Vile? Please. That's offensive to me. Sorry I don't assume anyone's experience is based on RACISM like the guy heavily implies.
I wish I could accuse people of hate crimes whenever I get poor service and blog about it.
y I don't assume anyone's
And you obviously have a lot of experience with racism directed at you, to support your blanket assertion?
Because the store isn't run
Because the store isn't run and staffed by racists? There's also at least 3 minority employees there.
Are you an African American?
Are you an African American? Because a person's race can very much influence how they're treated in a retail store. Just because it hasn't happened to you doesn't mean that it hasn't happened or that such stores should not be accountable.
Are you?
Just because it happens to you doesn't mean it is racism. Never ceases to amaze me when black people describe asshole-y behavior I and everyone else I know who is white...experience all the time.
You know what's racist? Non-white behavior towards white people in Boston (while complaining to your friend about how racist Boston is.)
Oh oh ...
Seems like some "Colorful" person forgot his place. Those people should all know by now that it isn't POSSIBLY racism unless any and all white people have exhausted all the potential extra explanations - including ridiculous ones.
Yup, they need MY permission to call something racist! Those people can't possibly judge their own experiences! They're not white!
I mean, why do they hate white people so much that they don't ask us what is and isn't racist?
Next time, ask my permission and let me come up with a zillion improbably alternate theories.
Goes for the bitches here, too!
nope, try again.
Seems like some "Colorful" person forgot his place. Those people should all know by now that it isn't POSSIBLY racism unless any and all white people have exhausted all the potential extra explanations - including ridiculous ones.
I didn't say it was impossible, I said it was unlikely, but thanks for the strawman fallacy on top of the burden-of-proof fallacy. The burden of proof falls on the person making the claim, and "two employees being unhelpful to a customer who is black" != proof "two employees are racially discriminating against the customer", no matter how much you claim it is. If I walk into the store and they ignore me, that doesn't mean they're discriminating against people who wear glasses.
Google "confirmation bias" and "correlation is not causation."
So does that mean that every
So does that mean that every time a black person deals with someone who's rude, they're being rude because they are racist? Or does that only apply to sales people in uptight boutiques? I just want to know, because as a white person I'm obviously not qualified to comment or form my own opinion on the matter.
I don't know, why don't you
I don't know, why don't you ask your black friends for their opinion?
this is just a glorified yelp review
no real content
Is it just me?
I've read through the whole entry about 4 times by now and, well, is it just me, or is there nothing in his rundown that actually suggests any form of overt racism? Like, being directed to the menswear section when one is a man: that's racist now?
(I did, however, learn that this ~artiste has had a solo exhibition and is so wildly in-demand now that he needs new clothes, and that he "doesn't care" about Riccardi enough to write to them directly, but apparently, cares enough to write about them on his blog.)
This is too bad. I'm sure
This is too bad.
I'm sure that there aren't many places in Boston where one can buy a Men's skirt.
On a related note, years ago I dressed up as Oprah for Halloween. When seated at a fine Back Bay Bistro, I was immediately served a Leg of Beef. It was delicious.
Bias?
After reading this man's post all I see is that he ran into two rude sales people. This is not an uncommon experience. He offers nothing to support his conclusion that he was ignored due to his race. Should I , an older white man, conclude that when I am ignored it is due to my race or age? I think not. The sad fact is that some sales people are lousy at their job. Nothing more. Nothing less.
Do you not see the irony of
Do you not see the irony of you, a white man, telling an African American that his experience with racism doesn't have enough "evidence" and is the result of "nothing more" than "lousy sales people"?
"I have" an "experience" with
"I have" an "experience" with "scare quotes"
Am I missing something...
"I said hello and repeated my request about suits and skirts for men. He replied, “Yeah, that’s downstairs. This is the women’s department.” I advised him that I was aware of that and that I wanted to know what was available in menswear. He replied, “It’s downstairs,” and just stared at me. I thanked him and told him that I would find it myself.
I left the store. I went to Barneys."
The staff at Riccardi's have
The staff at Riccardi's have always been rude, I stopped shopping there in the 90's.
The Local Artist's Exhibition at the ICA
consists of paintings of male heads sticking their tongues out. But I digress.
However, while the local artist may have experienced rude behavior on behalf of the staff, I think when he asked to see what is new in men's "skirts" might, just might of thrown them for a loop.
the prejudice isn't against African Americans.....
....it's against dudes who wear KILTS. Can't a guy shop for the latest tartans and pleats without being harassed? This is an outrage.
White Guy Here
Many years ago I had this happen at Burberry on Newbury.
I'm a fat guy, mid 30s, white... I'm not a well dressed person but at the time I was making a ton of cash and had the means to spend spend spend.
Like Julia Roberts in Pretty Woman, I was pretty much told by staff that I should be shopping at KMart for the way i was dressed (I'm a T-Shirt and Jeans kinda guy). And pretty much was shunned right out of the store and no one would help me.
Too bad they acted like that, as I know they are all paid commission and lost a large sale because I bought a very nice handbag for my sister at a competitor for over 1k. And I charged it on my titanium Visa card. *shrug*
This is why I do NOT shop on Newbury Street. The attitude is so thick you could cut it with a butter knife. These sales people should know that people who have money to spend don't always look like they are loaded, and some look like average joes. You should treat everyone with respect as you never know who someone really is.
Treat everyone with respect
While I agree, that truth is you should treat everyone with respect until they do something to make you not treat them with it. There is no reason to be rude to someone who has not been rude to you. EVER.
Respect? No. Courtesy? Yes.
Respect is something you earn and--to be blunt--not everyone deserves it. We all, however, deserve the basic courtesy that comes with being part of a functioning society. Like coffee tables, hat racks, and Eggs Benedict, it's what sets us apart from animals.
The whole concept of "respect"
"Respect is something you earn and--to be blunt--not everyone deserves it. We all, however, deserve the basic courtesy that comes with being part of a functioning society."
The whole concept of "respect" seems to have changed since I was younger. People feel "disrespected" now for every silly little slight, when, in fact as you say, the offender was simply being rude. Unfortunately, now people are known to kill other people when they feel "disrespected". "He disrespected me". When I was younger, "disrespect" wasn't even a verb. One might "treat someone with disrespect", but no one was "disrespected". The word has been cheapened.
Every human being deserves common courtesy. But respect, in the old sense of the word, must be earned.
Not a new problem
I'm kind of amused that you say that this is some sort of new or recent problem after the Whitey Bulger trial just concluded. Like Whitey or any one of those "witnesses" wouldn't kill somebody that looked a them the "wrong" way?
This is as old as organized crime.
Much older
> This is as old as organized crime.
Think of things like the Hatfield-McCoy feud (which was not a "first" by any means -- even it it was especially intense).
Bad Sales Service is NOT racism
See, this is the problem - everyone acts all offended for no reason. Are sales people at high end boutiques more snobby? Most likely, then again, most of them can't afford to pay for that they are selling.
As far as the whole 'I'm a fat slob with money and they treated me badly' sort of response you see here, wow, is that a fat person trying to cry about being discriminated against? Maybe you were just creepy. Bragging about a titanium card? Yeah, they aren't that hard to get.
As someone (like myself) who has a taste for finer things (and a wife with the same) I am in and out of the boutiques around the Back Bay (LV, Jimmy Choo, Burberry etc) rocking a flannel and jeans / cut off shorts and have never been given any sort of nonsense fatso and darkie are talking about. Then again, I didn't ask for a skirt like I was some sort of avante garde douche.
It isn't a Boston thing, it isn't a black thing, it is a people thing. Learn to grow a pair, thicken your skin, or actually call out the bad behavior to them / ask for a manager, instead of some lame blog or letter to a large company that doesn't care.
I'm offended by people that
I'm offended by people that feel their race needs to be a part of their personality.
...and also by fat people. Unless you have a medical condition, that's something you can control and do something about and you should not use it as a crutch to be prejudiced against.
It must be terrible to be so perfect in an imperfect world
You do realize obesity was recently declared a medical condition, no?
As for race, why do white people keep presuming they can know what it's like to be black in this society?
(No subject)
and now it's time to play the race card
With respect, Adam
I am very offended by minorities who consider the cause of every slight they experience, even minor issues that happen to all people eventually (like rude sales staff), to be the result of their race.
Such "chip on my shoulder" moves greatly diminish the efforts to eliminate the far more serious issues minorities face here and in other parts of the world. It's also one of the reasons we don't have true race equality in this country.
Do we know this guy has a chip on his shoulder?
This is the only thing I've ever read by him, so I admit I have no basis on which to judge. Have you read or seen more by him?
How about the "I'm black so
How about the "I'm black so people already are suspicious of me not having money and possibly stealing things" comment?
How about how he notes he "doesn't care" to send this message to the store yet in the coda mentions that he sent this to over a dozen different blogs.
"Doesn't care." Yeah sure ok pal.
Not this blog
I don't think I've ever talked to this guy, I certainly didn't recognize his name when I saw a link to his post on somebody's Facebook walk, checked it out and thought it was interesting enough to link to on this here blog. That's how the Internet works; he certainly didn't send anything to me.
As for feeling like white people distrust him on sight, that's not exactly a novel thing. You might have read recently about how the president of the United States said he went through the same thing until he got elected to the US Senate or how a federal judge declared it was unconstitutional for police in New York to stop men on suspicion of Walking While Black.
I am very offended by
You should probably move somewhere where there are no minorities.
As for race, why do white
As for race, why do white people keep presuming they can know what it's like to be black in this society?
As for race, why do black people keep presuming that they can claim something is racism with little-to-no proof, and go unchallenged?
That cashier was rude to me. Must be because she hates black people!
I didn't get a call back for that job I interviewed for...DISCRIMINATION!
That gas station attendant did a sloppy job washing my windshield! He must think a black guy like me doesn't deserve a nice car!
That guy yelled at me for parking in a bus stop! He must think black people need to "know their place"!
That cop pulled me over for speeding! Awwww, can I get a Driving While Black, people?
"I didn't get a call back for
"I didn't get a call back for that job I interviewed for...DISCRIMINATION!"
This is an actual thing though and there is data to back it up. Or is this one of those po-mo Internet head games oh god
First,
to take an entire race to task for playing the race card is erroneous and an ignorant comment. Most "black people", do not go around pronouncing "racism" at every turn! You are making a broad generalization that is not a truism.
Second, Adam made a very good point which, for some reason, you choose to ignore.
Third, why?
You're pretty easily offended
You're pretty easily offended by menial things. If only you could be offended by racism or lame fonts on street signs.
Kiss my A**
Dude, kiss this fatso's very big and hairy ass. Seriously.
My whole point of my post was shoppers come in different shapes and sizes. Just because I didn't dress to the nine's doesn't mean I don't have money to spend. I used my PLATINUM card to show I had money to spend right away.
So again, kiss my fat hairy ass. Then take your comment, fold it in four corners and stick it up your tight ass.
On a different note, I usually won't tell anon people off, but I'm tired of being attacked on here by anon people. There's a reason why boston.com REQUIRES you to login now to comment because its too easy to make anonymous posts and say harsh things. If you feel that way, create, an account, login, and don't hide behind being anonymous. Its cowardly to do so.
Sorry folks
I'm in a mood and I've had it with anon's on here... I'm taking NO prisoners today.
Keep your heartrate down,
Keep your heartrate down, man. I'm no anonymous. My account I registered doesn't work and I didn't care to make a big deal about it. I've posted a lot on this site and Adam has reblogged and retweeted stuff from me before. Just because I post comments without an account (and I do have my twitter account shown) doesn't make anything I say invalid.
Truth
Want me to reset your password and send it to you? One of these days, I swear, I'm finally going to finish my never-ending upgrade to Ver. 7 of Drupal (just in time for Ver. 8 to come out), which I'm hoping will fix the password problem.
Sure. Please do. As much as I
Sure. Please do. As much as I love typing barely readable captchas in every time, it'd be nice not to have to!
Point of Fact...
Actually you said this in your post (if your stubby fingers can scroll up)
"And I charged it on my titanium Visa card"
Hey, I got a store for you to go to, its called "A Fridge Too Far!" Also, are you upset Tent City closed, so you are forced to wear Hawaiian shirts and judge robes?
This is a joke people - calm the Hell down. Also, lose some weight.
Jay Leno walks into a store...
Wearing jeans and a jean shirt. Other than fame, what qualifies him as a customer worth sales associate attention is a watch costing well over the $1K mark. Likewise, expensive shoes, belt, jacket, eye wear, crispness, not worn out appearance, and how the person carries them-self give away means. If you feel and look like you don't belong in a place, people will treat you accordingly. Look like you want service, and good service people will notice and respond.
Alas, not true
... I've dealt with store clerks ignoring me to talk on their mobile phone, sales associates "handing me off" to their colleagues so that they could help a [cough] younger, male customer, and total discourtesy. Once at HMV I was followed around the store by security (heh, like they had anything I wanted enough to buy, let alone steal). There are stores -- these days, including everything on Newbury -- where I can't be bothered to shop ever again.
And I'm not even black. Just old, white, female, and in an effing hurry. Their competition likes me :)
This is like the Iran/Iraq war....
Is there some way that they can both (author and store) lose?
Please.
Newbury St. stores are NOTORIOUS for their rude, snobby staff. The whole damn Back Bay is a rude, uber pretentious place. I do not understand why people insist on shopping, eating or even going to bars or clubs where the staff [and management] routinely act like stuck d-bags. Whatever.
I have numerous friends [YES, 'professional' and 'professionally attired'] who've been treated like they were on someones D list while attempting to shop on Newbury St. I myself wear t-shirts and jeans [or *gasp* cargo pants!] most of the time and get dirty looks when I just casually glance for a few seconds at the 'boutiques' while walking by. Attitude REEKS on Newbury, the Back Bay, Beacon Hill, from the valet parkers on up.
From the way this incident was described and knowing nothing else other than this version of events, I wouldn't be surprised if the man was flagged as being undesirable due to who he was. But trust me, this by no means only happens to black people.

Since he brought up Oprah
If the subset of the world's population that shops for $38,000 handbags constitutes a race I'd have to admit to being racist. I hate "those people".
Yep
Agreed.
Not to mention the fact that I simply don't understand how Oprah managed to become this famous and influential. What does she have that Dr. Phil, Sally Jessy, and Donahue do not? Note: I know zero about day time TV.
You know...
I hate it when salespeople on Newbury don't recognize my genius.
Reality
As much as I personally don't give a hang what people wear, I honestly don't think someone can walk into an establishment and ask for "men's skirts" with a straight face and not expect the staff to be at least slightly taken aback or maybe flustered as top how to respond, if it is not an establishment that specializes in such an item. It simply isn't the most common request around.
As for the sales staff talking among themselves instead of helping him, I find this to be a problem in general, not just in snooty Newbury Street stores, and not confined to customers of any particular race. What REALLY bugs me is an employee at a checkout counter carrying on a personal conversation on a cell phone while conducting the transaction with a customer. This happens quite frequently.
The designers he mentioned
The designers he mentioned make men's skirts.
