Local company develops kit to turn bicycles into hybrids

The Boston Business Journal introduces us to Superpedestrian, which is about to launch a rear-wheel replacement that stores energy from braking in a lithium battery - which then releases it to help bicyclists up hills or to just go extra fast. Based in Cambridge and founded by somebody at MIT, natch.

But does the bike have to break to generate electricity? doesn't sound very efficient.

I think you need an afternoon caffeine break Adam. :-)

Yeah, I think that's how these things work. I know that's how the hybrid cars charge.

Break != brake. These things work on braking, not breaking...otherwise they'd be broken and they wouldn't work.

you need a drivers license to operate an e-bike in massachusetts, and you can't use them on multi-use paths.

Hmm. Interesting. I've long thought that we could keep the sheep on the curb during the "don't walk" portion of the cycle with border collies ...

Same goes for cars who have no idea what a turn signal is. Or what a No Turn on Red sign means.

We can all play this game. There are shitty drivers just like there are shitty bicyclists.

Any hybrid bike that would rely on braking for its power would run out pretty quickly around these parts
