Marathon bombings delay sale of old Morton's liquor license
The owners of the Darth Vader building at Boylston and Exeter were negotiating with two serious bidders to take over the long shuttered Morton's space when one of the parties, who owns "a nearby existing restaurant," was injured in the Boston Marathon bombings, building attorney Dennis Quilty told the Boston Licensing Board this morning.
Because of that, Quilty said, he was seeking another 60-day extension on the erstwhile steakhouse's liquor license, so that the landlord could finalize an agreement with one of the two concerns and get the space back in operation as a restaurant. He declined to identify either of the two potential operators.
The landlord evicted Morton's in January, 2012 for failing to pay its rent - it was more than $200,000 in arrears. Owners of scarce Boston liquor licenses are not allowed to just sit on them without actually using them.
Quilty last appeared before the board in September to plead for more time, saying the landlord and Morton's had reached a deal under which Morton's would hand over the license to the landlord, which in turn would find a new operator for the restaurant space and sell the license to them.
The board decides Thursday whether to grant Quilty's request.
