Maybe a giant mole made this hole at the Sugar Bowl

Sugar Bowl hole

Remember a couple weeks ago when the state shut the Sugar Bowl path at Castle Island for repairs? As Dave Shea noticed this morning, looks like they have some more work to do.

That "Sugarbowl Sinkhole" has been growing there at least five years. It started about the size of a dinner plate. Dangerous, unsightly and inconvenient for runners and walkers who, on busy days, often have to wait on one side to allow others to squeeze through the narrow passageway that remains open.

This is a great example of government inefficiency. When I saw on UH that the Sugwarbowl would be closed for repairs two weeks ago, I figured this would finally be fixed. Hard to believe it looks worse than ever. Shame on the DCR and Southie pols. I'm not a big Billy Bulger fan, but Castle Island and the Sugwarbowl were pristine while he was in power. Today? Not so much.

Castle Island, etc. is virtually Billy Bulger's backyard. As Tim O'Neil famously said, "All politics is local." Had Bulger not used every bit of influence that he possessed to maintain his backyard then he could hardly expect to be re-elected.

But what was not so pristine during Bulger's rein? His brother's behavior for one. But Billy was not Whitey's keeper so that can not be held against Billy. But to paraphrase an equally infamous, albeit fictional pol, some might think that, I couldn't possibly comment.

So the better comparison would be posed by looking at maintenance of the entire Commonwealth during Bulger's rein.

First of all it's Tip not Tim O'neil. Has everyone forgot that it was Mitt Romney who dismantled the MDC and changed the name to DCR to improve things? As someone who walks the Island and the Lagoon every day it is clear that the DCR has not been doing there job. Castle Island looks great most of the time except for the area around Sullivan's. I can't blame the DCR for the slobs who refuse to use the trash receptacles.

The few DCR dudes that work at the Island do a great job trying to keep the place clean with little resources. The place went downhill when Deval got rid of John Ciccone for writing disparaging stories out Deval and the DCR.y

The MDC was a bloated patronage empire that thought nothing of turning parkways into highways. DCR on the other hand is full of yes men afraid to ask for any additional money or manpower lest they get sacked by the governor.

Blame Nick Collins. This kid is always looking toward his next move as opposed to keeping basic state services going. Overpass above Old Colony Ave is going on 2 years now for simple repairs, ask southie little league parents about this "inconvienence" This kid is quick to criticize every move in City gov't while the state agencies he is supposed to oversee piss on his constituents. What's his answer "the Mayor sucks"... Agreed Nick, but so do you.

Let's see what Maureen Dahill's companion is going to do for Southie.
Probably next to nothing.

The DCR shut down the causeway for nearly two weeks to do repairs. Granted they did some small shphalt repairs. But during the nearly two weeks that the causeway was closed they never even touched this sinkhole that has getting bigger and bigger. The DCR is the most irresponsible, patronage filled useless state agency in Massachusetts.I think DCR means Don't Count on Results. But they sure know how to shut down Day Blvd and tow cars for Road races.

Castle Island overrun by rats, sinkholes on the Sugarbowl, towing cars for road races, the list goes on. Blame the Governor and his EBT crew.

All politics aside...Time and the tides slowly wear away the dirt and gravel that supports the walkway. There will always be "sinkholes" on this walkway. Patching with asphalt delays the problem for awhile.

Rats come out of it.
