New Somerville chant: Who the hippest? We the hippest!

Carrie Russell declares Somerville America's hippest city.

Russell, who doesn't live anywhere near the Ville (but who admits to time at Harvard Law), counts up all the hip things about the Paris of the '90s, from Fluff parties and bespoke bicycles to competitive sidewalk chalking and potlucks with the mayor. She concludes:

Yep. Somerville has out-Portlandia’d Portland.

No way. Sommerville is lame in comparison to Oakland.

paying 3 bucks for a doughnut. Three fifty if you want bacon on it.

They feed two.

Seriously - those maple bacon things are 2x the size of anything I've ever seen.

Kane's doughnuts are monstrous. One of those fills me for the better part of the day.

for half the price! Funny thing about Kanes...no hipsters. Imagine that.

Well to be fair, these are more hand-made pastry than doughnut. They're small batch goodies made with real butter and high quality ingredients by professional pastry chefs - not machines. Hence the price. There's definitely a place for cheap-o donuts, too. These are a different animal all together.

What do you think they put in their donuts? MSG and 3 day old lard?
And what makes you think that the fine people who have been making Kane's Donut's all these years are not some of the finest artisans Saugus has to offer?

Tell you what, next time I'm in Kane's I'll ask them to put up an autographed picture of Lena Dunham up on the wall. That ought to raise their hipster cred amongst the Yelp set.

Stupid posts and articles like this help reinforce the idea that Somerville is some utopian hipster mecca, and those lemmings keep eating it up and moving here. And buying $4 doughnuts. And making the line to the Neighborhood Cafe an hour long. And raising rents. Etc, etc, and so forth.

Those kids need to get offa my lawn!

Don't worry, they only go to Davis. They take one look at Spring Hill or East and talk about how "rough" it is. Yeah, those Brazilian immigrants with day jobs and families, that's some scary shit, man.

That article reads like it's satire. She's mocking Somerville.
