No slippery slope: Bar has license suspended over ice-luge drinking

The Boston Licensing Board has slapped Nix's Mate, 89 Broad St., with a five-day license suspension after detectives found patrons slurping hard liquor off the end of a six-foot ice luge, patrons packed in like sardines and patrons at tables with unlicensed "bottle service."

Two of the days are for the ice luge, which detectives said were being used as an "amusement" in violation of state law. A detective testified at a hearing last week he saw somebody pouring Grey Goose vodka into the top of the luge, down which is poured into a patron's mouth.

Two other days are for the overcrowding; the remaining day is for serving bottles of booze to patrons at their tables without a proper permit.

At the hearing, a bar marketing manager denied patrons were ever at either end of the ice luge, brought in for a private party, and that waitresses used it only to pour and collect sangria.

Nix's Mate can choose which five days to shut or it can appeal the decision to the state Alcoholic Beverages Control Commission.

I've always suspected it was true, but it's nice to have confirmation that being amused is a violation of Massachusetts law.

you're going to need a permit for that. along with dancing and milk drinking.

Although the Boston Licensing Board takes no stand on dancing, the Mayor's Office of Consumer Affairs and Licensing most definitely does - bars have had to face the wrath of office Director Patricia Malone for letting patrons dance without a license.

but it is just hilarious.

it reminds me of arrested development and the "no touching!" joke throughout the show. only i picture a bouncer screaming at a twenty-something in her going out clothes, drink in hand when she starts to feel the music:

"no dancing!!"

Where everything is either illegal, or you need a permit for it. No having fun allowed around these parts!

Spend some time in Texas.

MA is anally concerned with overcrowding in clubs. This dates from the Coconut Grove nightclub fire in Boston during WW2, when over 500 people died. It's still considered the worse incident of it's kind in American history. The club was overcrowded and this was one of the reasons many victims couldn't escape.

Need a license for a pool table, to dance, to have karaoke, not allowing beer promotions, etc are a complete joke. A nice way to generate revenue for the City I guess, and job creation for the BPD officers.
