Oh, Brookline, I hardly recognize you anymore

Two concerning items this week in the Wicked Good Brookline police blotter. First, somebody called 911 to report a growing problem with people walking down the sidewalk bumping into other people. Then on Friday, police had to respond to an orange menace:

Fifteen elementary-school-aged children were in Clark Playground tossing pumpkins.

Maybe they'd drifted over from the North End.

I've noticed people walking down Harvard St. in the bike lane lately. Not in a crowded area, just because ... well, I don't really know why.

Brookline is the worst.

It's not just the bike lanes, it's also elsewhere in the street, when there is a perfectly good sidewalk available less than 10 feet away.

My totally unscientific observation of this phenomenon reveals that many of the people who are doing this seem to be relatively recent immigrants from eastern Europe. Is there some kind of cultural thing at work here? Is it safer to walk on the street as opposed to the sidewalk in eastern Europe (or was it in the old Iron Curtain days)? I can't believe that this goes back so far as to be related to the pouring out chamber pots from windows days, but who knows?

With respect to your comment about Brookline in general, well, the paramecia ask: why do you non-paramecia always want to be all up in our cilia?

The media is too afraid of us to report on our liberation activities bravely resisting the colonial occupation and apartheid of our ancestral homelands by our ornithophobic human oppressors in the lead up to the annual celebration of their invasion and devouring of our ancestors for fear we will escalate our gobbling campaign to total warfare!

A caller on Kent Street reported people bumping into her when she walks down the street. She said this is a “growing concern” in the community.

Don't go anywhere near Newbury Street or Prudential Mall for the next two months if you are that concerned. In fact, don't go near any mall or any airport.

In fact, just don't leave the house....
