I'd rather have scratched up vinyl anyway. It just seems better - you can wipe vinyl seats off, but these will have germs and grit stick in 'em. It's also hard to tell if they're wet. Eh...
No idea what the T was thinking when they decided on this pattern of fabric. Seems like it would end up being a haven for gum, which would be hard to get out.
On a side note, why would someone take a seat like that? Its like the stop buttons in the back of buses that people seem to take. Its like WHY would you want such a thing..
