Police: Panhandler wouldn't take no for an answer at Alewife

Dumais

Transit Police report arresting a man who, on being turned down for money at Alewife around 1 a.m., threatened somebody who'd just gotten off a train:

The victim had just exited a Red Line train and proceeded up the escalator from the platform. Upon reaching the top of escalator the victim was approached by a male who ask the victim for any spare money. The victim responded he did not have any money and continued on his way however the male followed him and continued to badger the victim for money. The victim upon reaching his vehicle quickly entered however when he attempted to close his door the male stepped in preventing the door from closing. At this time the male demanded the victim give him money or insinuated the victim would be harmed. The victim handed the male cash, upon receiving the cash the male stepped away from the vehicle and the victim shut the door and quickly drove away.

Michael Dumais, 29, of Boston, was picked up not long after and was taken to a space where people would prove to be even less amenable to his requests. He's scheduled for arraignment today in Cambridge District Court on a charge of unarmed robbery.

Alewife late at night would be a scary place to be harassed.

I haven't been able to get a straight answer from the T as to what hours a station clerk is supposed to be there. One clerk told me that if I need help, someone's always in the train inspector's booth at the end of the platform, but I'm not sure if that's true.

I'm pretty sure every terminus station has someone in it. At least, as long as the station isn't locked up and shut down. I've never not seen someone at Alewife. Same for Oak Grove and Wonderland.

I often see nobody in the main entrance customer service booth at Alewife mid-days and late nights. Which is why I tried to find out the official staffing schedule.

CSA booths are often abandoned, and I wouldn't rely on them being staffed. But there's starters/inspectors/assistant dispatchers/what-have-you in a crappy booth on the Oak Grove platform, in the more permanent looking booth at the northern end of the Alewife platform, and there's always multiple people walking around at Wonderland it seems. These guys aren't really meant to play CSA, but they can certainly help you.

By the way, everyone: those boxes with a button for "information" and a button for "emergency" actually work. I've seen inspectors test them on occasion.
