Potential collapse of South Boston church forces evacuation of residents of neighboring building

The Red Cross reports residents of the six apartments at 322-324 Athens St. have been evacuated from their homes behind the destroyed St. John the Baptist Church, because "the back wall of the church is still threatening that property."

Firefighters are escorting residents to the South Boston Community Health Center to meet with Red Cross staffers.

Meanwhile, the Boston Fire Department, which says the evacuation affects 10 people, reports that while the cause of the five-alarm fire remains under investigation, officials do not consider it suspicious.
