Red Line diversion (first weekend) due to Longfellow bridge work

I walked across the Longfellow bridge today to observe the construction.

There were state police officers stationed at either end of the bridge telling cyclists to dismount and walk their bikes on the sidewalk (there was no room for them to bike on the road, given that the MBTA had both lanes of traffic). The cyclists I saw obeyed, at least until they were out of shouting distance from the officers, when they hopped back on their bikes and rode along on the sidewalk.

I saw quite a few non MBTA vehicles on the bridge, at least going from Boston to Cambridge. Perhaps they were lost. Perhaps they were deliberately trying to get out of taking the detour, either on the Craigie or Mass Ave bridges. A few tour buses, some private cars.

The red line shuttle buses seemed to leave at very regular intervals, and none were packed, but I made my observations at about 8:30, 9:00 a.m. on Sunday, so it was still early.
