State Police release sketch of alleged unregulated cab-driving rapist

The Globe has the particulars.

Meanwhile, State Police say the Herald is blowing the whole not-reporting thing way out of proportion and fulminate that the Herald has no business raising questions about the politics of which police force patrols the Seaport area, because it's "arguably one of the safest and well patrolled areas of Boston" and to interview the Boston police commissioner about why he'd want his officers to be allowed to patrol a section of Boston shows the Herald doesn't really care about the rape investigation.

How about the Southwest Corridor, which is so dangerous that many cyclists don't use it at night because of the attacks and muggings?

Nothin' says lovin' like having a Bromley-Heath brat shoot at you with his BB gun, then waiting for 20 minutes for the state police to show up because they run a patrol through the park once or twice a night and don't have a barracks anywhere near the park. BPD won't respond. "Oh, you're in the park? Hold for State Police..."

Then there's the Esplanade, also patrolled by the State Police. Bang-up job they've done protecting people there, despite having barracks right at the edge of the park. Here's a hint, guys: rapists and other baddies can spot you a mile away, driving through it in your crown vic. Try walking or biking through....

Will be the first. If they're just straight up lazy, I begrudge them for that, if they're afraid, then that's okay, because I don't have bigger stones than any cop. But get somebody in there to do the job that has the stones.

Send pairs of men in on foot? May be a staffing problem.

Well, gee (expletive) whiz, what do you think a newspaper does? They're not there just to run the Inside Track and Howie Carr. Sometimes they do this thing called "news gathering" in which they ask questions of police officials (you know, people that work for you and me) in order to tell the community why our sisters and daughters are getting P in their V against their will.

I think that Alben's statement is a pretty honest and properly focused account of the situation, and I don't blame him for being a little peeved. I'd be even more peeved if I were in the Middlesex DAs office.

By the way, I am pretty sure that the Boston Police (and other municipal departments) have had concurrent jurisdiction over DCR (former MDC) properties (at least those in and around Boston) since at least the late 90s (unfortunately, I don't have time to look up chapter and verse, as it may be that jurisdiction was conferred by a session law that was never codified into the General Laws, and those are a bit harder to research from my location).

Concurrent jurisdiction over DCR lands, of course, does not include Massport properties, but I mention it because of the comment re the SW Corridor. I can't tell if the poster was actually quoting a 911 dispatcher, but I would be surprised to learn that a dispatcher said that.

Be surprised. The first thing a 911 operator does around here is try to figure out if you're someone else's problem...

Released, except you have to sign up and login. I don't care that it's free, I'm done collecting logins, giving my info to a shitty paper, and jumping through hoops for mediocre (at best) reporting. I see that sign up page, I close the tab. If someone else releases the sketch, then I'll see it. I know I'm not alone in this.
