There Ain't No Such Thing as a Free Bucket of Salt

There's a rumor going around West Roxbury that if you show up at the Millennium Park DPW salt shed with a bucket and proof of Boston residency, they'll fill up your bucket with salt.

"No, absolutely not true," the mayor's office says.

People will do anything rather than go to the Shaws. I think they still have salt in stock, unless there was a real rush this afternoon.

I would also imagine that the Home Depot on VFW would restock their dozens of pallets of salt soon.

I went to Home Depot in search of salt, and when I asked a worker where it was, she replied they were all out in the sort of weary tone you'd expect if she'd been answering the same question all day.

But, yeah, Shaw's still had tons (well, plenty) of salt, maybe because nobody ever thinks to go there.

Wy doesn't Home Depot order 1 billion snow shovels on April 1st? They probably have a market for 50 million people a year who want shovels, but only order 10 million a year. The other 40 million people go elsewhere.

as normal people shouldn't have to buy new shovels every year. However, given the quality of the stuff that the Despot sells, you may be on to something here.

I used to work for the Watertown Home Depot. I swear the people down in Atlanta just don't_get_winter; we used to run out of shovels and salt before it even started snowing every time. Sent everyone who asked to the Shaws in Brighton, which is always well stocked.

They follow more of the big-box calendar, which is that stuff is stocked several months before you start needing it, then is gone. I went in in like July to get some seeds (lettuce, herbs, etc.) and they said seeds were all gone and they were starting to get fall stuff in. I was like, but you can still plant these things outside until like September, and you can plant herbs inside year-round. They're like, nope, we don't carry them except in the spring because that's when you plant things.

Hope cheepo, Lowell's and two ACE Hardware stores in the area most people run directly to one of them. But you're right shawls always has salt in stock.

With this school of thought maybe Home Cheepo should get into the bread and butter game.

How come you don't have a clever moniker for Ace?

I just picked some up from Rozzie Hardware. Much closer to your house, no?

I told my next door Yuppie about this and he asked if it made a difference if his license showed his Mommy's address in Reading. What an idiot.

Unless you are on the special 'list' for friends of politicians and city employees.

If you show up after hours and grab a "free" bucket I'd sand.
