Thug on trial, day 5: The kinder, caring mass murderer continues his testimony
By adamg on Wed, 06/19/2013 - 7:45am
Matt Conley sums up and dissects Martarano's testimony:
He told how he was taught by his father and by "the priests and nuns" that Judas was the worst person in the world. This he explained let him see himself as ridding the world of many Judases. Apparently we are to believe these killings had some type of imprimatur from the Church or at least that Martorano was following one of the 10 Commandments given to Moses, that of honoring one's parents.
Peter Gelzinis also dissects the beefy gunzel (note to Herald editors: You might want to check the spelling on that).
The mass murderer who insists he's not a serial killer returns to the stand today.

Interesting shift in slang
The proper spelling is gunsel, and it's widely interpreted today as criminal slang for "gunman". But its original meaning was quite different. Thank Dashiell Hammett for slipping the original sense of the word into The Maltese Falcon, and John Huston and Humphrey Bogart for popularizing the current usage in their 1941 film version of the same: http://detectivesbeyondborders.blogspot.com/2011/0...

Excellent site...much thanks
for that link. I was unaware of it and I really like the author's writing style. Fluid and crisp, it's no bullshit and a pleasure to read. Conley knows his stuff.
