Brig Dauber captured the Public Garden tree that plunged to its demise across Boylston Street Friday night.

Surprising, I'd think the city would have an arborist regularly assess tree health? I can't imagine it would've gone from healthy to unhealthy overnight.
internal decay not easy to spot
Can't tell what species that tree is, but there's plenty of maples in the Garden and Common, and they're notoriously prone to sudden failure like this. A tree with pervasive structural damage can look very healthy right up to the moment it fails, because it's just the outside couple inches that's the living part and is passing water and nutrients around, but it's the core part that actually holds up the tree. When that rots away the tree can just topple over with very little forewarning.
