Wicked Local Somerville reports that even as firefighters were battling a two-alarm fire on Bromfield Road early this morning, a two-alarm fire erupted on Summer Street when flames from a burning car set a house on fire.
What's going on in Somerville? If this is some lunatic setting houses ablaze every day why isn't there more reporting on it? Most of my friends live Somerville and it's scary to see then headline and then need to quickly check the address to see if it is where they live.
My point is that you'd expect this to be the front page of the Globe, for there to be big press conferences, etc. Yet the only place I see coverage of this is UHub or the patch-type sites.
Maybe you missed where this is Somerville and not Boston. If it was the big city, there'd be a huge uproar. That is if it was in one of the parts of Boston that matter.
Seems like a number of these fires are being lit from the outside, especially when there's some kind of fuel (like a couch) on a porch.
Back in the day, I made fun of my parents for buying a home security camera that recorded to VHS. It later helped solve the issue it was bought to solve. If I owned and lived in a woodframe in Somerville, I'd think about having digital security camera(s) facing the street and/or areas around porches.
BTW, the WickedLocal article on today's fires said the Bromfield Rd house, which I once lived next-door to, was assessed at $234k. Is that based on some kind of tax fraud? Those houses are worth around $700k.

Yes, there is an arsonist
The city has called 3 of the fires arson; several of the others are still under investigation, so could be.

How did you miss the recent Globe expose?
On how 20somethings are moving to Somerville?
To their credit, though, boston.com did cover the arson reward story.
The Globe has read your comments and responded

Only 77,000 people in 4 square miles.
Not like a big city or anything...
Porch Fires
Makes me wonder if a couple of earlier fires may also have been the same person or persons.
There was one about a year and a half ago near Porter Square, and a couple others around that time.
I'm betting the one on Highland Ave. across from the Library yesterday was not arson, though - top floor interior.
Security cameras?

Replacement Cost
The land is what pushes it to 700K - the building itself isn't the entire value, and is not destroyed in the fire.
