My old man used to take my brother and I to Sid's all the time when were kids. The old man would take a nice sack of new paperbacks with the covers torn off that covered Sid's walls home and we would get a stack of comics with the covers torn off two for a nickle!

I forget the name, but there also used to be a smoke shop in Central Square in Cambridge that had those coverless paperbacks and comics. It was right next to the equally long gone Barney's Men's Shop. There's a cell phone store there now. There was also a coffee and donut place with a long, low counter you could sit at that wasn't a Dunkin Donuts. I miss these one-off unique places.

but they had a smaller selection of books than Sid's did. And lets not forget the muffin shop that was across the street whose name I can't remember.

Just FYI.

Those covers weren't torn off just to cover his walls. He was likely reporting them unsold to the publisher and making a little under the table money off the remains.

Ever been to Sid's? That's where the books ended up instead of being destroyed. The walls were covered with the paperbacks, not the covers.

I have a problem with corporations that destroy things to prevent someone from enjoying them.

I like looking at these photos, but I don't understand why they post photos with the address prominently displayed and ask us to guess the location. The ones of a mystery building (especially one that's not still extant) are much more interesting.

...who didn't grow up here and have to resort to Google to come up with guesses.

(You're right of course.)

to this building?

It's still there! Sid's Smoke Shop is in the exact same spot! To the left (Daniels Furniture Co) is now Ming's Market (which is great). I walk by there almost every day.

Not the same buildings, unless they lost their upper floors. Plus Sid's Smoke Shop is now at 1124, not 1096 as in this pic.

a blow-dry bar or a dog bakery, mark my words.

The thrift shop having the "gigantic rummage sale" looks like it has a lot of cool items.

LAST 2 DAYS - EVERYTHING MUST GO
says the white paper sign posted in the window of the furniture store (just to the right of the door with 1090 on it).

Probably why it looks so disheveled inside.
