When the saint goes marching in

St. Peter procession, Gloucester

Greg Cook spent time this weekend in Gloucester for the annual St. Peter fiesta, which featured a procession through town and, of course, the greasy-pole competition, in which men, some dressed in tutus, tried to race or shimmy down a long greasy pole to grab a flag at the end. Even the winner wound up in the harbor, of course.

During the procession, residents would yell, "Viva San Pietro!"

Good Morning Gloucester has video of the Saturday greasy-pole winner.

This is great fun, similar to the North End Feasts, but less well-known. I sold balloons at the St. Peter Fiesta in my younger days.

Is that a spelling joke? Or should "think" be "thing?" I think I'll choose laughter over judgement at any rate... :)
