Bail set at $1 million for man charged with trying to slice up park rangers on the Common

Honored by Boston Police

Park rangers, police officers and civilians honored for subduing man with knife, helping rangers.

The day after Boston Police honored park rangers, police officers and regular citizens for subduing him, Bodio Hutchinson had his bail set at $1 million on charges of armed assault with intent to murder and single counts of assault and battery and aggravated assault and battery.

Hutchinson faces the charges for an incident in October by the Sailors and Soldiers Monument in the middle of the Common during which he allegedly slashed at two rangers who asked him to put out his cigarette, the Suffolk County District Attorney's office reports.

According to the DA's office, passersby alerted Rangers Albert Hurd and James Lunnin that a man with a knife was up by the monument. When they got there, they found Hutchinson sitting at the monument's base, smoking a cigarette:

The rangers approached Hutchinson and informed him smoking was not allowed on the Common, asked for his ID, and inquired as to whether he had a knife. Prosecutors say Hutchinson stood quickly and brandished the knife at them. When he refused orders to drop the weapon, the rangers used pepper spray on him, prosecutors said.

Hutchinson allegedly lunged at one of the rangers, stabbing him in the torso and severing an artery. The second ranger lost his footing and fell; Hutchinson stabbed him twice in the side and three times in the arm as he was on the ground. Hutchinson then walked back toward the first victim and slashed him on the side of his back, prosecutors said.

Hutchinson briefly sat on the monument before calmly walking toward the Public Garden, prosecutors said

Several people in the park rushed to help the rangers and call 911.

Boston Police officers responded and observed Hutchinson toss an object into the lagoon in the Public Garden. He then allegedly shouted to police, “Shoot me! Shoot me!” Officers were able to take him into custody and recover a pink-handled knife with a 3.5 inch blade from the water near where Hutchinson threw the object.

Innocent, etc.

Hate the circumstance that created it, but I love the fact that so many people were involved to help the rangers.

Boston has shown many times that in tragedy people come together to help one other.

That said, anyone else reminded of the "The Young Ones" (the britcom) when looking at the four civilians on the right?

"And the parents will say 'Why? Why are the children crying?' and they'll say 'Because Rik, the People's Poet, is dead!' "

"Hands up, who likes me?" (everyone scoots their chairs back and send their hands down, as close to the floor as possible)

"Open up, it's the pigs!"

"First we sow the seeds. Then we grow the seeds. Then we eat the seeds."

"He called me smelly."

No. Hated that show. (loved it, miss Rik Mayall)

“When I was a boy and I would see scary things in the news, my mother would say to me, "Look for the helpers. You will always find people who are helping.”

― Fred Rogers

*To be clear, I am obviously not referring to the rangers being hurt

Must be Bell pepper spray.

Glad it turned out OK.

Why would a park ranger need to ask for the smoker's ID?
(this is a side question, I'm not saying this is relevant to the violence.)

Great reporting. The drama of a man who stabbed people and the positive side of people who came to the rescue. Happy news doesn't sell. But positive news coupled with the news that sells ("if it bleeds it leads") is a perfect balance. Thank you Adam.

Re: Pepper Spray. Some people are immune to capsicum, the active ingredient in pepper spray. It's a minority but this guy seems to be one who is immune to its affect.
