The WBZ meteorologist explains why he was holding a mug upside down the other day: He wanted to see if anybody would notice (they did). Seems he's supposed to do morning chitchat while holding a mug, but there's never anything in the mug.
It's probably over 25 years ago now that a local columnist, Terry Ann Knopf wrote in The Patriot Ledger (when they could afford a media columnist) about Boston TV meteorologists becoming "Weather Clowns." Don't ask me how I remember it but the column was terrific. At the time, the weather and sportscasters were transitioning to corny abbreviations and antics, each one trying to out do the other. I always considered Barry Burbank to be above the fray and still do. I wish Barry had refused to hold the coffee cup, but holding it upside down was well played. We want the news, weather and sports, not the props. Good for Barry for making a mockery of the prop masters.
It's a shame that local TV news has degenerated into the infotainment drivel it has become. The female anchors dress like they are going to a nightclub and all all anchors, weather people, etc spout inane drivel and chitchat. You wouldn't have seen this from Natalie Jacobson.
The stupid banter started when she was still around. Now it takes up most of the "news"-cast. 'Local' news is solidly filler other than weather and sports. Something happening in Florida now makes the 'local' news.
UHub and many other websites are popular now because of an utter lack of local coverage from the TV stations.
And that's without even getting it the lack of objectivity from broadcasters.
If you don't know who those names are, that's OK. They date from a time when people reported the news and weather, no banter, and allowed people to make up their own minds without the need to editorialize the story, express shock and awe, or roll their eyes.

Local news is a total joke now

Well there goes the rumor
That they all chug vodka & Red Bulls the whole show.
At least then he'd have an excuse for getting the weather wrong so much.

Coffee
He says he doesn't drink coffee (if you listen to the segment on WBZ's website).
I dont know how he can work so long in morning news and not take up coffee just to help with the sleepies.
Then again, not drinking coffee must be the reason why he's maintained his 'slow and easy' delivery he has. (which is perfect for mornings)
