Board: Mattapan club not to blame for melee that brought cops from all over

The Boston Licensing Board said Macumba Latina was not to blame for the aftermath of a fight that brought cops from three Boston precincts and State Police to River Street in Mattapan Square on April 28.

Police had cited the club for "a large fight, patron on patron," but the board ruled "no violation."

The club said much of the confusion that night was caused by police showing up en masse at closing time and blocking the narrow River Street with their cruisers just as patrons were leaving.

Although club owners admitted one man was punched in the face, in what they said was a small confrontation, they said they'd broken the parties up quickly. Police acknowledged the only arrest was of a man who refused an officer's order to turn right out of a parking lot across the street and instead started to make a left.

Protecting you from making wrong turns, serving you a night in jail. Excellent work by our public servants.

This is particularly disconcerting when you take into consideration that three precincts worth of police showed up because of a fight and didn't arrest either party involved, but instead carted somebody off for a traffic violation.

For what its worth I also don't think two consenting parties that want to fight each other should end up in jail either. Vehemence and vitriol are what make the world go 'round.

Only if an officer sees the actual fight can they arrest someone for fighting.

If you hit your wife, you can be arrested if the cops don't see it. Another person in a bar? No, they can't arrest you.

Can we see your copy of the police report? You must have one right? Because you suggest the police arrested that fellow soley for the attempted left turn?

See, the way the events hypothetically unfold in my mind, I feel like more must have ensued with this individual after the officer told him not to take a left. Perhaps something that escalated to him reaching the actions of a Disorderly Person, justifying the arrest. Perhaps you can clarify for me, since you must have at least read a copy of the report, correct?
