Boston Calling evacuated on account of potential impending doom
By adamg on Sat, 09/06/2014 - 6:29pm
As increasingly dark clouds rapidly closed in on downtown late this afternoon, organizers called off the Boston Calling concerts for tonight. Jeremy Stanley photographed the scene.
Will reports:
They told us to shelter in a parking garage. I guess they dont want thousands of sweaty hipsters inside city hall.
Glenn Clabo watched the storm roll in over Spaulding Hospital:
Porter Square and the area around Cambridge Common lost power.
A tree fell on a vehicle on West Brookline Street near Aguadilla in the South End.
Two women were hit by lightning on Crane Beach in Ipswich.

Too early, folks!
After the storm let up, Boston Calling goers began heading back to Congress Street to try to get back up to the plaza, as Jameson Case shows us:
But police got a weather report that a second storm was going to come through around 8:15 p.m. and they began trying to get people to leave again. When people trying to leave got jammed in place due to people coming back to Congress Street, they shut Congress Street to both pedestrians and vehicles on either side of City Hall to try to get people out.
Some people just don't want to give up summer now that it's here
Roving UHub photographer Neil watched the storm roll in over Nantasket- from the safety of his car. He reports that even as the skies grew darker and more ominous, people refused to get off the beach.
Around 6:50 p.m., he reported:
Of course, two people are now in critical condition after getting hit by lightning on a North Shore beach.
The Merrimack Valley got hit hard.
I could see menacing borderline supercells on the NOAA doppler feed roaring along the valley trough.
A G plus friend in North Andover posted shots of major tree damage. Inman square was its usual run of the gloriously oblivious getting drenched.
Great
Photo.
Felt like Chicken Little
Thanks. The photo was fro my car with just iPhone. I've been at Nantasket frequently year round and over many years. This was the most critical weather I've seen.
I mind my own business but today was prompted to warn people to seek cover.
Fell on deaf ears mostly but some people took heed (and cover.)
Boggles my mind that everyone else were taking selfies with basically a tornado in background and oohing over lightning strikes lmuch ess than a mile away.
Common sense ain't that common.
and just a few miles away
in Roslindale; we got nary a drop of rain until about 3:30 this morning. We had plenty of wind and thunder in the distance; but nothing worth noting during the evening hours. ...And we are not complaining about being overlooked by Mother Nature.
Lovells Island
I rode out the storm while camping on Lovells Island in the harbor. It was very exciting as we watched the storm approach the city. Then in less than 60 seconds, the wind shifted south dramatically and the rain began to pelt us and our tents.
We hid in the old gun embankments and waited it out. Was really exhilarating and when it was over, we watched the storm over and beyond Hull with a spectacular lightning show.
