Good work by police. Not stopping is unacceptable. Its even required for bicyclists in accidents with injury/death and/or appreciable property damage. Its only a $20 civil fine if they don't, however, and that doesn't have to be paid since there are no consequences for not.

... you won't spin into an anti-bike rant? Tedious, just plain tedious.

(Last rode a bike 34 years ago, but even so...).

Seriously, Markkkkk, get a hobby or something.

...ARE his hobby (apparently).

Its discrimination and needs to be corrected. Its a special privilege for cyclists and discriminatory for motor vehicle operators. That's different from anti-bike. Anti-car people who want special entitlement only see anti-bike!

Note, I'm not going as far as proposing protests by blocking and disrupting major bike lanes. ;-)

... with this story.

Stop disrupting threads with irrelevant rants.

I mean why does big government need to be telling drivers how fast they can go? Its honestly so discriminating that you are limited to driving 25 mph in a residential neighborhood, while people on the highway get to go 75 mph. Its not fair and clearly anti-car!

of course not, how would that be different from, oh, say, every day?

nobody would know the difference from ordinary, masshole-style double-parking.

Yes, this is a bikeless story, but please Explain to us how his comment is anti-bike.

... anti- anti-bike rants are also irrelevant, no?

How do bicycles fit into this story?

up

That is a criminal offense when operating a motor vehicle. The information I gave was how the same situation if caused by someone on a bicycle is only a civil offence with no consequences at all. There has been recent discussion on how police and the courts discriminate. This is clear discrimination and uneven laws.

So when you're driving a car, you're held to a higher standard than someone on a bike? You must be outraged that airline pilots are held to an even higher standard than that, and their freedom is further impinged by (a) requiring co-pilots for commercial flights, and (b) only being allowed to land at airports, even if a straight stretch of 93 would be far more convenient for their passengers.

Get in touch with your local member of congress. And stop whining about it here.

You've chosen to derail the comments by bringing in a completely different and unassociated topic to this tragic story.

When a bicyclist causes a hit and run and the article is run here, then you bring up your concerns. Until then you're just trolling.

As opposed to what, Markky? The slap on the wrist drivers get for leaving the scene?

I believe the young man turned himself in.

But the police press release with photo and description of the vehicle were instrumental to getting the kid to turn himself in.

His kind of behavior is getting too common. Celebrities and people like him calling their lawyer before calling 911. Or, in a fatal shooting by a cop, he texted his union rep before calling 911 10 minutes after the shooting.

Maybe, maybe, if this accident had involved a bicycle, you'd almost be on point. But it didn't: It was a guy in a car charged with hitting a woman on foot.

I'm sorry a bicycle bit you when you were just a kid, but try to restrain yourself.

Are you really equating the potential for damage by 20-30 lb vehicles with a average speeds of 12-15 mph to that by 2,800-5,200 lb vehicles that go up to speeds of over 100 mph?

up

After all, leaving the scene is criminal for a motorcyclist and a bus driver, with no factoring of vehicle weight or speed, just whether it has a motor over 50cc or not.

...somewhere where it's on topic. Really, do. I encourage you to create your very own website, where you and those who give a damn can talk about how awful bikes are ALL THE LIVE LONG DAY.

But in this thread? You need to eat a big bag of shut the hell up now.

My bike seems like it must weigh at least 200lbs

It will be interesting to see how they tracked this (alleged) hit-and-run driver down.

are actually relevant to the issue at hand - striking a pedestrian and leaving the scene.

They seemed to think this was going to be the work of someone from Mattapan or Roxbury.

You know, not in a racial profiling kind of way, just based on a hunch or something.

Stop derailing the thread with info that's not pertinent to the issue at hand. Who really cares where he goes to school?

... which came out shortly _after_ my post seemed to find these particulars relevant to the story. (Presumably they were googling about around the same time I was).

Fast work by the police. Nice job.

Remember that photo of the suspected vehicle, what looked like a Lincoln Town Car often used by livery drivers?

Well, the kid was driving a Ford Escape SUV. Quite a different silhouette.

Regardless, tips came in and police were getting a search warrant for the car when the owner said he was turning himself in, according to the Herald.

Wrong incident. You are confusing the yet-unsolved Blue Hill Ave. hit and run with this one in Dedham.
