Bostonians abroad: Southern California to get a taste of home

Bostonians heading into LAX will soon be able to satisfy their Dunk's cravings as the chain begins its westward expansion with outlets in Santa Monica, Whittier, Long Beach and Downey. Also, Modesto.

Dunks is awful. Sorry Cali.

And import any of the number of West Coast based donut chains that actually serve good donuts and coffee to the East Coast?

Though perhaps the West Coast Dunkins will be better, as I imagine it's harder to centralize donut production in a mega-factory when you only have five stores.

Realistically, I don't think the West Coast Dunkin expansion is going to get past mall food courts, airports, rest stops, and college student unions. They're the Sbarro's or Roy Rogers or Panda Express of donuts.

It's called Starbucks. It has different but comparable suck qualities.

In fact, the early Starbucks locations out there.were dead Dunkie dumps that keeled from the first Dunkin Invasion..

I spotted a few ghost Dunkie dumps out in Seattle.

Peets Coffee is also west-coast in origin.

doesn't sell donuts (at least the ones I've been to in this area). And if they decided to, they would probably be outrageously priced (like their coffee).

Sbux does sell nasty overpriced donuts and other bakery items. Coffee prices are the same as Drunkin Donuts. At least coffee tastes and smells like coffee at Sbux. Drunkins coffee has the aroma of burning styrofoam. Nasty stuff.

sell La Boulange pastries (donuts, croissants, etc.) I've only had a few La Boulange items, but they're far better than the "house" brand Starbucks sells in regions where La Boulange does not exist.

And try to stop by every time I'm in LA, most recently about a month ago before hopping my flight back to Boston (they're especially good after landing mid morning after one of those very early BOS-LAX flights). They're conveniently located near most of the car rental places. Their coffee leaves a lot to be desired, but their doughnuts are excellent. Also, the hamburger stand visible behind the red SUV in the background makes one of the best hamburgers I've ever had. (OT, but among my other LA musts: Philippe the Original and Clifton's Brookdale Cafeteria (though it was closed for renovations last time I was there)).

Friend of mine just flew into Seoul and encountered a Dunks the second he stepped out of Customs.

Dunks can be seen in train stations in Spain and Germany.

Nothing like that disgusting burned chemical smell when arriving at Logan, though.

DD is gross. A P.S. coffee shop in Cali would be appealing.

Anyone who does not prefer Dunkin Donuts coffee over other stores or brands has no taste. I'm not going to claim they have the best donuts or anything, but their coffee is perfectly done. Most other chains' coffee is at some extreme resembling either ashes or water.

Boiled for hours and dumped in a chemical mess of a leaching foam cup. You must smoke a lot of ciggies if you think it is done perfectly. Yecch!

Dunkin's coffee tastes like rotten boiled cabbage water.

like DD coffee are those who actually like artificial coffee flavoring, like coffee ice cream. Which is why a "regulah" is more cream and sugar than it is coffee.

"Rotten boiled cabbage water" is the best description of the swill they serve that I've ever read, so kudos to you.

I liked their hazelnut when I first started drinking coffee in high school, but then I had a cup of coffee at Coffee Connection and realized what good quality coffee tastes like. You'd only add flavored sugar syrup in your coffee if the coffee sucks to begin with.

D.D is the ONLY coffee I will drink.
I do not eat donuts.

When I was still a Dunkins customer, there was nothing fulfilling/satisfying about not knowing on a daily basis whether or not my iced beverage was going to taste the same from one day to the next, or if my dairy selection would indeed be correctly remembered or if the coffee was "fresh" or burnt beyond enjoyment.

Also, the sodium & calorie-injected donuts & side selections that gave me a constantly "weighted down" feeling just led to self-loathing. This is what I was wasting $4 a day on?! There was no point.

I quit Dunkins cold about 3 years ago. I also lost a much-needed 30 lbs. (combined w/ changed diet) & feel much better. Needless to say, I've been a committed customer to a local coffee company since those 3 years...the weight has stayed off & my daily (changing) iced beverage selection NEVER disappoints. I now spend my $ with the local company & feel good doing so.

You know you can just nix what you put in your coffee for the same effect. I went to skim from cream in my daily Dunkies years ago and dropped the weight as well. Has nothing to do with their coffee itself.

has a blend called 'Brazilian' which is quite decent. I know some coffee snobs are rolling their eyes, but it's the truth.

And yes, I'm reasonably up on coffee (favorite is Kenyan AA), and also know Brazilian coffee is usually known to be harsh and used as filler. But this 7 eleven blend called Brazilian is quite good, and inexpensive. 7 eleven donuts are also imo very good, I think better than DD.
