BPS could hand Dearborn STEM School to operator with no STEM background

Parent Imperfect reports on yesterday's meeting over the supposedly temporary educational managers BPS feels compelled to hand the Dearborn off to so it can stave off a state takeover due to poor test scores.

One, he reports, was one of the charter groups that sparked an uproar earlier this year when it seemed like BPS was about to spend $72 million to build a new school that it would then permanently hand over to a charter group. And the other, he says, "is a charter guy from Philly who needs a GPS to get back to South Station." Neither, he says, showed any evidence of experience in running a STEM program.

The city wants to tear down a beautiful old building in good condition which is both a physical and emotional landmark in the community so that a connected developer, out of state charter operator, and series of contractors can collect a FAT check.

SHAME!

But it's a charter school!!! Shouldn't we just be throwing money blindly at them?

Here's a suggestion: How about putting that money toward upgrading the technology at some schools that are already here, but can barely provide a decent computer skills class. There are 8th graders out there who have never had a computer class that is up to date, and that's a shame.

If the Teachers Union see an influx of cash, they'll demand it all! BPS is a money grab for their union employees.

Nothing they could do with the school system would surprise me at all. I just wish the rocket scientists that make all these decisions could be Rico-ized for some sort of criminal negligence or stupidity , and also be personally responsible for any legal actions.

Well then, that's strong reasoning. How could a 'foreigner' possibly teach our children Boston Algebra and Boston Computer Programming? This IS the Hub of the Universe, ain't it?

The most telling line of this sorry tale? "As always, Tito (Jackson) was right." If this joker really thinks Tito Jackson is always right, I'm not sure why anyone reads his blog.

You'd see pretty much all he ever writes about is BPS. So he's not making a generalization about everything that Jackson has ever said about everything.

...usually when you post it. And I don't find his myopic view of the BPS, or charter schools, accurate or enlightening.
