In Brookline, you don't try to shoo turkeys away without the proper tools

Cop with hockey stick going after turkeys

It has come to this: Brookline Police apparently now have to stock their cruisers with hockey sticks to keep the town's poultry punks under control. Science-fiction writer and elected town official Michael A. Burstein captured the tense moment Monday morning at Sumner Street and Blake Road. No word if the Boston cruiser was there for extra firepower, just in case.

Can't wait to hear about how #TurkeyLivesMatter from the TLF now.

But that's clearly a Boston cruiser.

But if you had read to the very end of my exhaustive three-sentence-long post, you would have noticed I noted the presence of a Boston cruiser (from West Roxbury, no less) behind the Brookline officer.

Strange. That's not even close to the E-5 jurisdiction really.

... a long, cross-jurisdiction car chase of the Meleagrid malefactors

Last time I checked Brookline and West Roxbury do in fact border each other.

Last time I clicked on the Google Maps link in the post and looked at the actual location in question, I saw that it's well into the part of Brookline not bordering West Roxbury and much closer to Jamaica Plain.

I think yuppies has morphed to basically mean middle class people who aren't union members or in the trades and were born elsewhere. Fair?

Yuppie to me, means a blissfully ignorant liberal white person who is naive to urban matters.

I think the phrase is still used to connote members of the "professional class" who are youngish (say 20s, perhaps 30s, but not older.) The outsider status has always been a given, because otherwise you are the "townie" lawyer or whatnot. I'm pretty sure that if your job is at a call center, you cannot be a yuppie. Perhaps an IT guy, but not the guy who does data entry.

The pejorative phrase otherwise is "hipster." Hipsters are not "professionals," or if they are they are members of the creative class. We might look at the both of them the same, but we know the differences. Either one threatens the status quo. Of course, yuppies eventually settle down somewhere, then they start griping about the hipsters.

poultry punks

Our fearsome feathered freedom fighters fearlessly face off with all those oppressively opposing us from successfully scoring our glorious goal of liberating our ancestral homelands!

We just about wiped you out once and will do again if provoked.

For all your swagger, the goose has totally outsmarted you. Nowadays, we sing about the christmas goose getting fat only to eat turkey instead.

... or so I've heard. But I've also heard they apparently don't taste all that good.

The invasive Canada 'Colonial' Goose population was granted "amnesty" under the Federal Migratory Bird Act of 1918. They are no better than humans in occupying our ancestral native lands.

Just ship them back from where they came from, in spite of that fact that they were born here? I didn't know turkeys wrote the bulk of the Herald comments.

We took in our Canada brethren under our wings only to have them throw in their lot with the humans for mere breadcrumbs. Bunch of ungrateful torries!

That's nice shooing, Lou.

"This American Life" did a great story about terrible turkeys recently. In fact a police officer in Martha's Vineyard shot and killed one. Google it, it's an entertaining 20 minute story.

While you are 'entertained' we mourn the senseless loss of one of our own in defense of their habitat.

Not surprising. After all, there are hockey rinks everywhere around here.

Hockey stick may be just the thing needed for police to control human jaywalkers also!
