Burglar startled to find somebody home in Allston apartment

A resident of Greylock Road in Allston reports her roommate was still at home this morning when she saw her bedroom screen up and a guy on the other side about to climb in.

Guy claimed he thought no one lived there. Even still, he demanded her laptop - which was sitting on her bed. The resident says the roommate refused and managed to scare him off. But that was not his first journey into the apartment - the resident reports her laptop is now missing.

He's black and had a pick in his hair. He was wearing jeans and had a white, polka-dot backpack.

Mr. Patrick recently signed a bill making it legal to purchase without an FID card for residents over the age of 18.

*Edit: Tried to embed a photo of the signing. I clearly have no clue what I'm doing.

Can you provide a link to the actual text repealing the FID restriction? My girlfriend just moved in to her first apartment this week and would like to get pepper spray but can't set aside the time for an FID card application appointment until October. I couldn't find anything definitive on a Google search other than some months old stories saying the bill was in the works. I suppose she could call the police department and ask but if anyone knows where I can find the info for sure I would appreciate it!

I think you mean "But that was not his last journey into the apartment"...unless he time traveled?

Security tracking software is cheap and easy to use to locate your mobile device in case of theft or misplacing. I use Lookout Mobile for my mobile phone and ESET on my laptop.

If you go to the police and tell them you tracked your stolen phone or laptop, they will not bother with you, because they avoid confronting criminals over small items.

Geez, after that happening once I would have secured everything. How'd she manage to get her computer stolen afterword and who would be dumb enough to come back and attempt to steal it again after being caught?

There's only so much one can do to secure a ground level apartment. Sure you can have your slumlord put bars on the windows, but then you die in a fire instead.

Get a pitbull or bribe a flock of militant turkeys to work as mercenaries.

I don't understand how a person could possibly get back in unless the window was left unlocked after she left.

It's fairly simple to jimmy most windows open with a pry bar, unfortunately.

Agree that this story doesn't seem to add up. Not least of all because the burglar expected an Allston apartment to be empty in the morning. Must have been his first day on the job.

Probably left the employer lap top in a bar and is now trying to avoid the consequences

I'm the victim who had the computer stolen- I was the only one not home at the time. Two of my roommates were asleep in their rooms, and one was awake, in the kitchen (right outside my bedroom) eating breakfast. The a-hole came in through my window, locked my closed bedroom door from the inside, and grabbed my computer and my backpack. He then went back out the window, and was in the process of breaking into my roommate's room from the outside when she walked in on him with her window and screen open, standing outside. She didn't realize that I had been robbed first because she just thought that maybe I had locked my door on my way out to work in the morning. It wasn't until I assured them that no, I did not lock my door, that my other roommate climbed through my window and we realized that my computer was gone and he had hit up my bedroom first and locked my door from the inside. While the detective was here, they got a call that there were two other break-ins reported in the neighborhood- one on Long Ave, the next street over. But seriously, why would I make up a story like this? I don't have renter's insurance and I'm most likely never going to see the computer again. Come on.

Unclear reporting was unclear.

I'm not asking to be an A-hole. I'm honestly curious. This infuriates me. I've had computers go down (not stolen) with lots of classwork on them. It was backed up on an external drive, but still made me angry since I had no computer for a while to get my classwork done.

Are you also located on a ground level floor?

I do have pepper spray that I carry with me & do live on the ground floor- however, it's two floors up from the street. Trust me, I wish I had been home. Thankfully I'm out of school so not having the computer doesn't affect me too much, since I do still have an iPad. Our landlord is putting bars on our windows tomorrow just as an extra precaution.
