The last time the harbor itself froze? Was it 2005ish when the inner harbor froze over and ice breakers were needed to maintain access to the Coast Guard? Or am I making this up?

I'm also wondering what the most extensive ice sheet was in anyone's recollection.

That sounds about right - I remember it being an issue for Massport and MSP Troop F because some knuckleheads were walking across to the ice from the area of Constitution Beach in Eastie and parts of Winthrop either to or to very close to the aerodrome at Logan.
