Citizen complaint of the day: The crazed, impatient drivers in Roslindale Square

A concerned citizen complains about South Street in Roslindale Square by the wallpaper store now that the street has a bicycle lane:

When a car is stopped for a pedestrian at this crosswalk, other motorists will often illegally use part of the bike lane to overtake - I've seen numerous almost-collisions at this location. This is a high pedestrian area. This needs to be redesigned.

and this is a big problem in other places too...

and drivers will try to go around you at begrade next to the commuter rail station if you're stopped for someone in the crosswalk and there's no bus at the bus stop. another scary location is the crosswalk at the irving. It's a school! why couldn't they do curb-extensions there? of course you can also park right up the crosswalk so it's impossible to see if anyone is crossing if there are cars there. They recently redid all of cummins and I think this was just before NACTO was adopted.

If Walsh is actually serious about pedestrian safety, these things really need to be addressed ASAP.

I agree. It's unlikely that anything will change.

Its probably like playing wack a mole when it comes to repairing these things. If this is a big deal to you then speak up about it, early and often. Perhaps make a in depth uhub thread.

The squeeky wheel gets the grease!

more impatient than ever (and I drive). When I slow down to make a turn, more often than not, I am passed on the right. Another big problem is drivers who cross the yellow line to go around another car or cyclist in the road while there is oncoming car traffic! Waiting for that inevitable crash.

but if you're slowing down to make a left hand turn, then traffic behind you has the legal right to pass you on the right if there's sufficient width. From MGL Chapter 89, Section 2

The driver of a vehicle may, if the roadway is free from obstruction and of sufficient width for two or more lines of moving vehicles, overtake and pass upon the right of another vehicle when the vehicle overtaken is (a) making or about to make a left turn, (b) upon a one-way street, or (c) upon any roadway on which traffic is restricted to one direction of movement.

This is not the only place where cars try to zoom around the one in front stopped for someone in a crosswalk. I don't think the bike lane is the culprit.

... who believe they are not bound by laws regarding driving (or courtesy or basic human decency).

Pretty much every time I stop for a pedestrian in a crosswalk I get honked at. F'ing ridiculous.

When I'm waiting to turn right from Cambridge Street onto Third Street, the same thing happens pretty much daily on my commute home.

Maybe the city should form a new department, composed of officers who would be paid to make sure people are following the law, and enforcing penalties on those who don't. Maybe that would help to curb some of this illegal behavior.

... for violations of the laws -- which might (purely incidentally) make money for the city's coffers.

and then we could put the serious offenders in for-profit prisons!

... we could have our own government owned and operated places to detain lawbreakers.

Think of all the administrative jobs it could create in government!

That's crazy talk!

Unless I'm mistaken about the location. But I've been riding on a South St. bike lane that connects to Belgrade for years.

The bike lane stuff is pretty new. Jay walkers aren't. When will they be addressed?

I'm actually okay with having an officer stand there and just write tickets all day until that stops. That's a stupid maneuver to make and I'm fine with just posting an officer up on that corner and ticketing everyone that tries it.

That both cyclist and car drivers are all too impatient, nothing will get fix. After all, were all MassHole, two wheels or four. All are to blame.

It's kind of a false equivalence when you consider how much more harm a car can cause. That said, cyclists do ourselves no favor by flagrantly violating the same laws violated by cars.
